I used Ticketmaster for tickets to a gig last week - I ordered my tickets ten days before and as a result expected to receive my ticket in plenty time.

On the day of the gig, I had been seventy miles from home. By the time I'd gotten home it was nearing the time my local record and ticket exchange was about to shut, so I rushed through and got a secondary ticket as it appeared that there weren't tickets on the door. This meant I'd wasted another £13.50 on top of £17 (there's Ticketdisasters booking fees for you right there) in the first place.

I had contacted them and said that I'd bought a second ticket, and asked for a refund on the first one. I travelled through to the gig, and got a phone call from home that Ticketmaster had been in touch with them, and organised to get me in at the door, all I had to do was to print off an e-mail (impossible as I was no longer near my home) and show it to them.

Eventually, the response was (in a condensed fashion) that as I had paid for entry to the event and Ticketmaster had organised this, I wasn't entitled to a refund.

As I was in no position to carry out the actions needed for this to work, I'm feeling quite peeved (especially as I'd originally explained that I'd bought a duplicate in order to get into the event, it was my friends first gig and wasn't risking not getting in). As a matter of fact, my ticket arrived today, one week after the gig and seventeen days after I originally ordered.

Does anyone know where I stand with this?

Have you checked their t&c's? What do they say?

Once you know what they say, phone your local trading standards - they will be able to tell you whether those t&c's fit with trading law.

I would suggest that what TM have done falls outside of what can be regarded as reasonable expectations for a ticket ordered as long in advance as your ticket was, but Trading Standards will be in the position to know for sure.
