I found this paragraph funny...

It's a shame that Festival Republic don't have too much problem with online touts as they're in league with a website that is used primarily for the touting of tickets online, and in previous years have directed people to the site directly from the festival's own website which sells secondary tickets at inflated prices.

It's a shame we felt the need to include it, but it's a bit rich the fest cracking down on touts while at the same time encouraging people to buy from touts. ;)

If Festival Republic were serious about stopping touting they wouldn't be promoting a touting site, and they'd have implemented the govt's anti-touting recommendations for promoters.

And if they were really serious about touting they could introduce a scheme similar to Glastonbury's - it's proven itself as the best anti-touting measure there is.

They've moaned a lot about touting but as far as I can make out all they're really wanting is legislation introduced under the guise of anti-touting but which will in fact only guarantee the position of existing promoters while stopping new promoters being able to rise to a similar level, which I see as protectionism at its worst.

I think its about time the government really did something proper about touting. Not so much the smaller venues, but the o2 size up there are nearly always tickets on sale on these tout sites or eBay the day after for ridiculous sums of money with the sole aim of people making an easy quid.

It's not even touts, in there true incarnation (people buying in bulk, getting out on the streets and earning there money. With a risk of losing out. It's just people who see a big band coming buying the max amount of tickets and selling them off the second its sold out online. At least the original touts gave you the chance on the night of the event to get in at slightly inflated prices, this way id just stopping real fans getting in.

Not that I'm condoning any form of touting. The best thing that could happen is a registration type system with photos required with decent return policies where as to let other real fans have a chance to see the band without the original buyer losing out on too much money.

It's not in Festival Republic's (or any promoter's) interest to stop touting. Touting means gigs sell out faster, and in the case of Festival Republic they can tout their own tickets and make more money. From the article it seems that they wanted the touts off the street for health & safety reasons. Melvin Benn saying that touts are exploiting festival goers is just a bit of PR. If anything his main gripe with touts is that they are competition to Festival Republic's own touting enterprise.
