Bestival 2011

Part of me thinks you're being deliberately contrary but most of me thinks you just have no grasp of awareness whatsoever.

First and foremost, Bestival doesn't have a demographic, and if you think it does then you could probably rest assured that it's not really going to be a festival aimed at somebody as closed-minded as you seem to be. I know that it has no demographic because the fact it doesn't is what made it appeal to me in the first place whenever I was considering going to it. A child could go to Bestival and not be out of place, as could a 60 year old chiselled Glastonbury veteran.

Second and most important, the line-up to Bestival in 2011 is one of the most diverse you'll ever see at a festival this year, and the proof of that - and further proof that it's not there to appeal to any certain demographic - comes from the fact that we have absolutely no idea who the headliner is, and we have suggested maybe 50 or 60 bands from a multitude of different genres and absolutely none of them would be out of place on the bill, including Take That.

They wouldn't be a shit booking at all. Having them as festival headliners would be astonishing considering the level of their fame and reputation now in comparison to the level of fame and reputation Bestival has. You may not like them, I f**king despise them, but they wouldn't be out of place on the bill and they would make a lot of people happy - and if they don't make people happy, a lot will certainly go to check them out; such is the open-minded and tolerant nature of the festival attendees. Would it be great to have somebody like Sonic Youth? f**k yeah! And I'd buy you a beer before we go and see them, but if you're going to mumble to yourself and mope about like some overly depressed scorned Tom Waits fanatic over the headliner not being to your taste, you can just f**k off back to your tent and leave everybody else to have a good time wihout you.

How wouldn't they be out of place? The festival is virtually sold out, and there's no similar acts already booked. Of course the festival has a demographic. It's not targeting any particular subculture, and it has a diverse line-up, but it doesn't significantly represent EVERY possible music taste. People will have bought tickets on the reputation of the festival, previous lineups, and the line-up so far, and, because of the bands that have already been booked and sold most of the tickets, I doubt that Take That would go down particularly well with fans who of bands such as The Cure, Primal Scream, PJ Harvey, or even Pendulum (who I probably despise more than Take That).

Would Take That be an impressive booking for a festival of Bestival's size and limited history? Yes. Would they be a headliner that'd fit in with the line-up so far? No.

I won't be moping if the headliner isn't to my taste. I was disappointed by Pendulum, but understood it. If I don't like the headliner, then they'll still have been plenty of bands to entertain me over the weekend (and probably plenty to entertain me at the time), but what I don't want is some crappy pop headliner selling the last tickets and causing resales to go to a load of idiots who pick their CD collection based on how fit the singer is.

If Bestival appeals to a predominately Rock audience, why the hell do they have Diplo on the bill? If Bestival is aimed at a predominately Dance audience, why the hell does it have The Cure on the bill? If Bestival is aimed at a demographic of 18-25 year olds, why the hell does it have Brian Wilson and The Village People on the bill? If Bestival appeals to an Indie audience, why does it have Pendulum on the bill?

To say it has a demographic or sets a standard of audience appeal is ridiculous.

A band like Take That wouldn't be out of place on the bill and they'd be far from a shit booking. They just aren't going to be the third headliner because it's not logical or feasible to have them as third headliner when a band like that would only be shoved on a bill to sell tickets, undermining the diversity of the festival and the level of bands people WON'T go and see in the process. Second reason they won't be headliner is because doing a relatively small festival like Bestival really isn't in their financial interest when they can easily pack out stadiums across the country.

Let's change the subject anyway now because this is getting tedious...

Pet Shop Boys.

They wouldn't be a sh*t booking but they wouldn't be the highlight of the festival summer either because Bestival isn't broadcast on BBC. That's where the album sales/memories are created. Like when Blur played Glasto and I sat at home being gutted :-(

Chemical Brothers have been ruled out a few times by Rob and if the idea is to get a band/artist that fits with the theme of the festival, common sense would dictate they aren't even a consideration. The general consensus of opinion on the official forums is that if we're going to have a Dance act then it'd probably be Orbital on the count that The Chemical Brothers already headlined in 2007 there - same goes for Underworld, who headlined in 2008.

I really hope it's not No Doubt, not because I have anything against them, I just think they're a very ordinary, 'nothingy' sort of band whose announcement will result in a shrug from most who are going. If the act isn't going to be 'big' then I want it to be someone who at least elicits some sort of reaction, good or bad (or both). Try to imagine this on Friday from Rob: "After months of speculation and rumours, I can finally reveal that the third headliner at this year's Bestival, closing the main stage on the Sunday, will be... NO DOUBT!!!" How many people would actually be delighted? How many people would be angry? It would, in my opinion, be a MASSIVE let down. As I say, nothing against them but I can't see that there'd be this much build up just for it to be someone so ordinary. It'd be like someone telling you they had a special surprise treat for you for your birthday and then taking you to Pizza Express.

FYI, Sly Stone has just announced he's releasing a new album in August...
