Remember, in every case, the more popular something is, the better it is likely to be . That pile of shite Miranda has just become BBC2s most watched show for weeks, and it got over 4m. And anyway, 3m isnt that good, (if we are judging on ratings, then 57m people might well agree with him)

Never understood what was funny about that sketch. Keeps getting brought up, time after time as one of the all time "great" sketches. How is this funny?

It's not that I'm against old humour - I've laughed at Charlie Chaplin, Some Mother's Do Ave Em, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools And Horses, Dad's Army and Norman Wisdom out loud before (much to my own shock). Morecambe and Wise just washes right over me and always has. I'm just sat there, looking at it, unable to relate to the frankly confusing shenanigans I'm watching.

I seem to have to do all the work; I have to imagine that both of them are in the throes of a severe mental breakdown, it's the only way I can make this shit even remotely funny.

I think it is somewhat pointless arguing on a personal level what one thinks is funny or not. One mans meat, etc.

However, if a gauge has to be made..and that I suppose would have to be on audiences and longevity.. then, you cant argue that the likes of Dads Army, Blackadder, Two Ronnies, M&W, Fawlty Towers etc "must" be funny.

I cant see much on atm which will be rolled out in 20yrs time and labelled a classic.

Of course though... things are much more diverse now. Remember that at the time all the above were made--we only had the 4 channels (3 in fact)and therefore... you had to watch em..esp if yer parents did (no TVs in bedrooms then!)

I couldn`t stand Dads Army 1st time round... but when I eventually got into it..the one thing that stands out which (i think) makes it so good is... timing. Lowes in particular in everthing he did was brillaint at timing. Tommy Coppers timing was also great. Benny Hill even.

I dont think timing has so much impact now... apart from Ricky G in the Office... once again..its brilliant cos the timing is so good.

the better stuff stands the test of time though, I think. Porridge is still good... M & W were as much an institution of their time as anything. Some of it works, some doesn't. As I said, I think The Office is madly overrated. The Peep Show is genuinely innovative, but innovation alone dates quicker than a libdem promise.

I agree that adoring stuff from the past for the sake of it is pretty daft... although I don't think it happens more in music. It does for some people, but quite often they'll admit it's purely for nostalgic reasons..

even nostalgia's not what it used to be...

Boyle was great on Mock The Week. Far as I can tell his style was based on quick wits just as much as pushing the boundaries of taste. With this latest show however there is nothing to admire about him anymore. The stuff with the cookie monster ejaculating blue jizz last week was the pits. Even at my most puerile I would have shook the head and winced at how rubbish it was. Boyle makes Roy Chubby Brown look good at the moment. It is pitiable what has happened to him.

The Office will definitely be held in high regard in years to come. It is a classic, no question about it.
