You serve it on the plate as you would serve the stuffing and the cranberry sauce. The sauce doesn't look great, but it tastes fantastic. The This Morning recipe doesn't sound brilliant, a bit plain really.

My family recipe is different.

Ingredients:

One pint full fat milk

4 slices white bread, with crusts, ripped in to small pieces

one onion

several teaspoons mixed herbs (to taste)

a dollop of single cream

Chop the onion in to small pieces

warm the milk, keeping it just below boiling

Add the onion

cook until onion is soft (making sure the milk doesn't boil)

slowly add the bread, stirring constantly until mixed in

add the mixed herbs. I'd recommend 5 or 6 teaspoons, and stir it in.

Add freshly ground pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg (if desired)

If sauce is too thick, add more milk, if too thin, add more bread, you want it to be a porridge consistency

Check that the onions are soft

Take off the heat, and add the dollop of single cream, stir it in.

This can now be left to cool until needed, as long as it's kept covered.
