This is the problem I have with programmes like these, it's all going to end in people going "It's disgusting how much money has been spent on him" and going on about drugs refused on financial grounds just like you see in the comments section of the Daily Mail website.

If it all kicked off with the death of his mother, nobody can ever know how they'll react to an event such as that, and if it kicks off an addiction then it's a downward spiral from there.

If we start deciding who we treat and who not on an individual basis rather than on a set structure, then we're getting into very dangerous and morally murky grounds indeed, especially when it's required to hold any quality of life.

annoying how we never have money for worthy things - always money for undeserving cases. ampersand, does it make you feel good to know that this guy gets more money spent on him on care at home than most of us earn per month? all while the likes of me and you have to pay tax :)

the doctor talks some sense, people need to get a grip and realise unless they change their ways this problem will get worse and worse...exactly

none of this 'i dont eat much' 'im not greedy' absolute rubbish..you just wouldn't get to the sizes these people are without massively overeating..which is through greed!

so sick of hearing how it's not their fault, and it's not greed

if i ate myself to 25stone perhaps it;d be time to change , or should I just carry on filling my face till I get to 50stone? Then say 'oh i dont know, im not greedy or lazy'

The impression that I got from the programme was that he had let a huge event in his life affect him badly which lead to a food addiction, but the impression that he was putting up a barrier probably out of shame rather than anything else.

The programme met my very low expectations, it's hardly a real documentary. It wants us to look and judge a man who clearly has problems (whether he's unlikable or not) but that's all we get from it, a gawp and a soapbox to stand on. We learn nothing, we gain nothing as a society and it just leads to mass generalisations.

Aye, but similarly if you've lost a parent then you'll not be acting yourself, will you? If someone's let food be what comforts them and hides them from probably the worst thing that can happen to someone then it'd be so difficult to get yourself out of that mindset, particularly when it becomes an addiction.

All I'm saying is that these is what programmes like this aim to create, a state of "Look at this bloke! Hate him, the greedy twat!" rather than anything that benefits or educates us. It's lazy, lazy reporting.

I refused to watch this program as the adverts annoyed me. I seriously can't understand how anyone can get that big. Yeah something in his life has caused him to go into major depression and he turned to food, but to get to 70 stone is beyond ridiculous.

What about people suffering from that other extreme eating disorder, anorexia nervosa? Is that ridiculous too? I fail to understand how people can get themselves into that state too - extreme starvation to the point of death.

Of course these disorders are beyond our everyday understanding - that doesn't mean we should blame the sufferer for their condition.
