Unsigned bands and artists you'd like to see this year?

Don't get me wrong...I'm very pleased with the announcements on the line-up so far, but for me EOTR has always been about the smaller people, the unsigned bands and artists I've not heard of before...in fact every year it's been these people that have made the festival so unique and I've always come away having discovered lots of fantastic new music.

So with the opening of the application process to play this years EOTR, I thought maybe a new thread was in order to highlight all the smaller bands and artists you'd really like to see or know are applying because they seem to get lost otherwise in the bigger 'who do you want to see' thread.

I'm going to start by adding my support for Canadian singer/songwriter specialhyde...beautiful, lo-fi, acoustic songs...perfect for the tipi tent and a late night set in the woods. Currently living in Toronto and recording his debut album before heading to the UK later this year, the demos of the songs on this album and some other earlier songs are available for free download on his website so give them a listen. http://www.specialhyde.com/

I've been urging a band called Dorcia to apply and I think they plan to. Based in Tunbridge Wells, I've seen them support both Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and The Smoke Fairies at the Forum (in TW, obviously). They've got that Arcade Fire-esque, multi-instrument, epic pop thing down to a tee. I think they're just mastering their first EP, so with any luck they'll have that ready to go before the aplication process finishes.

Also, Milks & Rectangles from Canada. Not sure whether they're officially signed or not, but they've only released a couple of EPs via Bandcamp. It's that indie-rock that Canadians do so well, and I know that they're keen to play. Hopefully it can be arranged.

Ben - yet another good shout from you (I thought my music tastes were eclectic but you sure have some range ;) ). Saw half of 52CR's set last summer at SG party and they are perfect for the Garden Stage.

Obvs NOT unsigned but EITS though have to be a possibility for festivals this summer too (new album, spring dates including roundhouse etc).

I'm surprised there are so few recommendations for unsigned bands on this board. Doesn't anyone here ever see an amazing support band and wonder why on earth they're not better known?

With the closing today of applications to play EOTR, check out the bands/artists mentioned here already and add any recommendations for bands you feel really should be more widely appreciated.

I tend to get excited about 'new' bands that I see as support acts, come on here and find everyone else has been into them for years ;). That said:

I mentioned Dana Falconberry and Matt Beaur in another thread, after seeing them support Joe Pug. Either alone or together, they'd be good.

Paris Suit Yourself are a crazed bunch who veer from rock n roll to punk to ska to postrock, usually in one song. But they're signed...

Deathcrush would be fun (Scandanavian Sonic Youth fans whose singer jumps into the audience and slam dances into people. She knocked over my drink :( )

Other than that I can't think of anyone I've seen who isn't signed to some label, no matter how small...

Clive Tanaka Y Su Orquestra

His debut album is split into two parts - the first being 4 tracks of upbeat tropical dance music and the second having a more relaxed, ambient 'chillwave' sound. That description probably sounds a lot like something Pitchfork would latch on to and then forget about a year later, but his songs have a lot of depth and are incredibly catchy. I'm not sure he's ever played a show so I doubt he'd play, but it's worth a shout.

Love Axe

Their debut album is... pretty phenomenal, and surprisingly difficult to categorise. There's a bit of Menomena in there, as well as some folkier numbers and anthemic rock songs. Check them out on Bandcamp.
