...so yesterday--- I bought some LARD!.

The only people who use LARD are Mothers and Grans eh. No Brothers or Sisters or Aunties use LARD anymore.

But last weekend I was making me bacon and egg sarny (egg piece to you Jocks eh!..whats all that about? An egg piece? )and I got to remembering being at me Mams and getting the same food..and it seemed to taste better then.

Why would that be I thought? Am I just being melon-colly etc? I`m not like that in that sense.. when me parents began their journey into Skellytondom... they`d had a fair whack and like Pheno the other week.. it was time to go (although we didnt have to inject em with the blue juice! ;) )

Anyway, I got round to thinking ... LARD. Aye. I`m going to get some LARD to see if the bacon tastes like it used to.

Bacon when I was a kid didnt splatter like it does now--its full of watter nowadays eh.

Mam used LARD for everything. Sunflower Oil? Vegetable Oil? haddaway n shite.. they never seen a cupboard in our house.

And Olive Oil? Eeeee lad --closest we got to Olive Oil was when Popeye was on the tele.

As Dad got older... E45 cream replaced LARD as the be-all-and-end-all for him.

(on the phone...)

"Mam, think theres something wrong with the bairn.. she is really hot and itchy"

(dad in the background) "Tell them to put E45 cream on it Cis!"

a year later.. we went in with one of the girls--pot on--broken arm...

"Here yer are Den... E45..just in case"

"Dad--she`s broke her arm..what am I gonna do with E45 cream?"

"It`ll come in! I keep getting it after those shingles I got. Just take it son."

"OK Dad. I`ll take it"

He would have it everywhere.. squeakin doors.. E45. Slugs on his plants.. E45 No Bylcreem left...E45.

When the bairns used to sleep over... they used to say "Oooo Dad--hope Granda doesn`t get the E45 out of the cupboard"

So-- LARD. You might become my frying friend once again.

Standby for my first sandwich report using LARD.

Is LARD the friend of any of you?

den

PS. I just want to point out that in fact I didnt buy the LARD..it was bought for me--- as in a gift. The Gift of Lard. Aye. An tha.

Not lard but dripping. Made from the juices of roast beef and poured into a pot to set. You used to get the lovely tasty jelly like stuff at the bottom.

My all purpose fix all, not cure all, is Gaffer tape. I think half my world is held together with gaffer tape.

It was always pork dripping (on toast) in ours. With either salt or the thinest of spreadings of Marmite plus optional cheese with either. Haven't had any for years. Modern pork fat just doesn't render down the same (my mum say's). The quack would tell me to avoid it anyway.

I miss my Grandad when I think of pork dripping on toast  .
