Highly unlikely in Consett! :( ...the cuts and that.

Marvelous sight if you can ever see em mind. Fortunate to get a viewing in Iceland a few years ago.Made me feel quite spiritual.... Iceland is a lovely place to visit but obscenely expensive.... £20 for 4 chicken breasts for example.

Whilst I dont expect to see them in my part of the world in the South East of England just yet...this is the beginning of a very interesting year or three with this coming solar max. Start hordeing your cash under your beds, tins of canned food and gas for your cookers folks and dont whinge when your Iphones and computers stop working. At least the sky will be pretty at night while the earth's communications systems and all regular life as we know it royally f**ks up due to our chronic independence on electrics :P

Actually, since the Icelandic economy crashed it's not nearly as pricey as it used to be. I was there this time last year and was able to get a fantastic 5 course lobster meal at one of the best restaurants in Reykjavik (the Lobster House) for about £45. Didn't get to see the northern lights as it was too cloudy, but had a fantastic time anyway.

I was proper shocked re prices. 1st night we`d booked a hotel, just so we knew we`d have somewhere y`know.Basic affair--no bar. Our lass said she`d go out for a sandwich and some drink. This was about 9pm. She came back with a few sarnies and 3 bottles of beer....she said you`d better sit down when you eat those and drink that bottle... it cost £50!

Not kidding. Was only days later we found out that you cant buy drink, legally (except in restaurants) after 6pm..and that its Govt regualted shops (off licenses) that sell it.

That set the tone. This was in Recjyvic..next morning we had a mosey round before beginning our Island Trip... our mouths dropped as we viewed the prices..clothes were unbelivable..but everybody was dressed immaculately. A small bowl of soup was £8.

However--all that aside..it turned into a fantastic trip. The car was far too small.. Toyota Yaris.. we had The Boy J,6 and King Larmer was only a few months...and all our gear!

We stopped in Youth Hostels.. one was 30miles from the nearest road/shop and was the best place I`ve ever stayed..had the whole place to ourselves..it was built into the hillside and had a grass roof.

The owner helped me realise one of my life-long ambitions.. to catch a Salmon. It was pissin down and icy cold.. he took me and J down to a tiny, fast flowing river and gave me first cast.. straight in! The look on my face as I landed it..honestly..one of the best feelings of my life.

Took it back and shared it out..best salmon ever tasted of course.

The North is quite different to the South and much more wild and snowy..drove for 3hours without seeing anybody... then was pulled over by the Police. Shit ourselves.. guns out the lot... I was hauled into their car.... speeding! I`d been speeding-- not too bad 20kilo over..in the middle of nowhere.... £220 fine--on the spot--or jail!! WTF!!

And then.....

An Icelandic road.... we planned to visit this geyser..road looked OK on the map.. so off we went... and y`know when yer thinking..should we turn back? But you gone too far and you think it will be ok? Well--this time it wasn`t. Got stuck as you can see.

Had to get everything out of the car and tried to dig it out...couldn`t push it. King Larmer asleep in the back. We were totally stuck.. about 20 miles from the main road..phone useless.

Was starting to get a bit worried after 2 hours--then thank The Lord..a 4x4 came along and pulled us out! Great fun.

I rememebr when our lass told me she`d booked it.. "I`ve done something" she said... that was always a sign of doom... and i must say.. I didnt fancy it at all..with the baby and all that.. but as usual.. her judgement was spot on as Iceland is easily one of the best places you could ever go to (as long as you like that sort of thing).

We spent the last day/night back in the capital.. and went to an ICE BAR which was an experience.. £6 for a tiny shot of vodka!

And The Lagoon... a huge outdoor volcanic pool.. which was fantastic. Its freezing..but the water is gorgeously warm..and waitresses swim out with yer drinks (do not ask how much!).

And what a cekkle... we were just relaxing and King Lar fell asleep in my arms (in the water)..he just floated away..asleep! Everybody was taking photos of him, just wandering about with the flow. Its not salty..and i dunno whats in it that makes it so.. but you just float.

Was a good end to the trip.

Highly recommended.
