Reggae

Saw Toots & The Maytals at Glasto last year, been listening to some Jimmy Cliff recently as well - loved both but really don't know my reggae.

Who would you recommend going to from here? Tried getting into Bob Marley and don't get the same level of enjoyment - I know some eFesters will be able to provide some great suggestions!

Ta very much.

You could do worse than check out the reggae/ska show each Friday from 3 til 5 on eFestivals Radio. :)

Outside of that, many of the Trojan Records compilations are good - but there's plenty of duff ones too. You should do OK with them if you pick the nones with some of the more famous names on (there's a reason why they're more famous that others :).

For an absolutely classic 'reggae Britainia' album, I strongly recommend 'Handsworth Revolution' by Steel Pulse.

Bob Marley, deffos give it more a chance. Get a copy of Catch a Fire asap.

Steel Pulse and Prince Buster (Madness' main inspiration) are always worth a punt too.

If you’re after a bit of ska, as a starter, keep an eye out for a good Trojan box set like this one. Its impossible not to dance to this shit. Especially if youre pissed up. Literally impossible.

Im sure Neil will have a hefty list or recommendations for you.

Edit – As above. Handsworth is a masterpiece.

A bit of Dub is a natural progression, Lee Scratch Perry, King Tubby, but its a bit reptative.

I certainly got into it by Marley, particuarly as part of The Wailers (get some Peter Tosh whilst your at it). Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown and why not a bit of Linton Kwesi Johnson for some dub poetry?!

More contemporary reggae would be Alborosie, but I'll warn you, he's a Sicilian!

Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown are also good ideas. Considering I'm living about a mile away at the moment, I'm very tempted to go and sit in Handsworth one day and listen to Handsworth Revolution the entire way through
