is there any enjoyment to be found in crowd surfing or in the mosh pit?

to me they both seem pretty pointless,

crowd surfing i really dont understand.

the mosh pit. were guys usually.. take off there tops and just sort of half fight/wrestle with each other just seems very strange to me.

i love music and thats why i go to festivals/giggs,i just dont understand how you can fight/wrestle and enjoy music at the same time?

maybe someone can tell me what im missing or not missing :)

Depends on what music you're listening to. To punk/ska/hardcore/metal moshing is awesome. It's just a way to enjoy yourself with other peole, going mental to great music. Love crowd surfing too, although i understand there's more of a safety issue regarding it, you have to pick your time. With mosh pits the etiquette is usually really good, people get picked up and no one gets hurt. "fight/wrestle" is also a bad description. It's mostly just running about.

I must admit, i've never stood back and considered why I do it or why anyone else does. It's just a hangover from punk thats a load of fun. :)

When I have worked in the pit at gigs you get plenty of security hate crowd surfers. I don't like it as such as you can end up with a kick in the face as you try to get them down. A firiend used to grab them by the testicles and then march them to the back door, such was his hatred.

I remember when I first started going to gigs and I used to crowd surf and it was fun as it feels weird kinda thing. But then after spending time down the front, especially on the barrier, it really isn't enjoyable getting a boot to the head and people crashing down on your neck. For that I don't crowd surf at all no more, only agree with it if it's for a medical emergency or something. That and I've seen people purposely try to steal shoes and that.

Moshing is something I also used to do a lot as it's just a way of expressing yourself to the music as a lot of it that people mosh to is usually quite fast and aggressive. Does annoy me when people decide to start mosh pits for the hell of it to the most un-moshing kind of music. But now I'd much prefer to stand just a little bit back and actually watch the band.

Don't understand the enjoyment of being right up the front. Squashed, sweaty, people landing on you, boots to the head. Maybe I'm getting old but much prefer moving back where you have your own personal space to have a dance, hold a pint, be with friends etc

i did abit of moshpitting once just to take a big guy down who was crashing 14/15 year old lads and lasses to the floor...he was clearly going in elbows and fist's flying so me being me i thought i would go for the big guy helped him to the floor..and give the little moshers the right to have fun. this was after he caught me with a flying elbow to the centre of the nose causing two black eyes and a good laugh for my work collegues at my expense for the week.

crowd surfing isnt for me..been twated around the back of the head unexpectedly enough times though..

I like to stand on the outside of a pit, usually in a good spot and you get a nice bit of space. Only have to avoid getting flung in every now and then...

Crowd surfing never really worked for me, its not really getting passed around more of getting chucked from one group to another whilst getting handled everywhere

Always greeted by a pissed off security guard who likes to make that known

pits are the only place to be. need to get involved in a gig. if it's a heavy band/song, i don't see why you would want to just stand on the sides with your arms folded like some seem to do.

I used to be f**king mental. Went to a thrash festival in sheffield uni in '87 and I could be seen repeatedly somersaulting from the stage. it was early days mosh/surfing wise. the moshpits back then werent quite as brutal as they can be now, I think a lot of people tend to act like pricks in pits in my experience.

Obviously I stand quite close to the back these days - its a young mans game. I did go down the front for NIN at the MEN a coupla years ago, and kinda ventured close for DEP last year.

back in the late 80's no-one dared go over the front, because you got a kicking from security if you did. (certainly at st georges in bradford you did)

there's a big gap between going mental in a mosh pit, and standing at the side with your arms folded...

some like to be in the thick of it without the threat of getting a boot in your ear....

i think a lot of punters go to gigs just to mosh.... they barely care what's going on onstage, as long as it encourages moshing

and if that's what they paid for, good luck to 'em
