A better comparison may be with Arcade Fire - Green Day are definitely more relevant, well-known and appealing to the average Reading goer than them.

yep - but it only really works to book Green Day and not AF if the festivals wants to be seen as a time-warp, and suffer the effects of that in future years.

What I'm trying to get across is that the festival needs to be seen as progressive, if it wants to progress into the future. That doesn't mean that they can't ever book Green Day again, but it does mean that they need to keep one eye on the future in what they book as well as giving a line-up that can sell for the current year.

Dunno, everyone has heard American Idiot!

If my mum has, I can guarantee that she won't know who it's by and won't have heard of Green Day. But I'd actually doubt that she's heard it.

Whereas she'll have definitely heard 'welcome to the jungle' and she'll know of GnR, even if she's not able to put the two together.

As I say, Green Day have remained more of a niche band than being mainstream. That's not saying they're not hugely popular or not very well known in certain demographics, but they've not had the same penetration into mainstream culture as other bands with similar levels of sales have managed.

I think if they ever competed, Green Day would get a much bigger festival crowd than G & R ( Or Axl Rose and his session musicians...)

that's a different thing tho.

As much as I don't think that Green Day will play, I still think they at this point are more likely than Guns n Roses were last year. As pointed out they'll be coming off the back of a new live album, not that this will have incredible sales, but Billie Joe has tweeted that he wants to get out playing live shows again (after meeting up with Mike Dirnt on the set of American Idiot.)

They also have strong ties with MCR, who supported them in the past and were somewhat of an "understudy" band to Green Day. MCR were awesome when I saw them last month, and would manage Saturday headliners (Blink 182 weren't as good in my opinion, I didn't expect to enjoy MCR, I only took my sister but I loved it). But I'm a huge Green Day fan, so I'd love to see them at my favourite fest. It's not totally unlikely they would play, but its not absolutely necessary for them or for Melvin Benn to book them. I'm sure the lineup will be strong enough.

No offence to Keese, hes the one who brought up the libs, but he didn't think arcade fire was headlining...

but anyways if MCR are headlining the sunday wouldn't that mean they have a 2 hour slot? i honestly can't see MCR being on stage for 2 hours, i think a hour to a hour and half, would be okay, but two hours, in my eyes people would get bored and leave..

Yeah but Guns and Roses played Sunday at Leeds, which is what i was getting at

not Reading.. Leeds

I can't remember if Blink had 2 hours at Leeds but they might have had it had Reading? i honestly couldn't care less, last year i remembered someone saying at Leeds its usually a Sunday the 2 hour slot, which is MCR play Sunday, more or less they'll probably get the 2 hour slot, which would be a waste
