Gettin a taxi from Bristol Airport to Glasto. Has anyone done this before and is it handy enough? and also, is it recommended to book a taxi before hand or is there ones that hang about outside? If its recommended to book, does anyone have any taxi numbers to ring to book??

Thanks in Advance :D

you'll have no problem getting a taxi as they're always outside the airport.if its the wednesday you're travelling they might turn you down for glasto though.bear in mind that some of us took 8hours to travel from the m5 to the car parks last year due to traffic,imagine the meter runnung for that long...ouch.(I'd guess its around 80/90 miles from airport to site)

you thought about using the trains? theres a bus runs from the airport to bristol temple meads station every 20 mins costs about a fiver,then get a train to castle cary or frome and go from there.shuttle buses provided from castle cary.

already thought about trains etc. someone on here said bout gettin a taxi on the wed, and agreeing the price before hand. there'll probs be 4 of us sharing. the only thing that was annoyin me about havin to get a train etc is that we wud need to get supplies e.g. food, drink etc and someone suggested getting a taxi and stopping on the way etc. apparently temple meads train station isnt in the city centre therefore wud be hard to find somewhere to get these supplies?!?!

ahh im so confused...someone needs to help me decide wat to do as i've no idea wat its gona be like :(

"National Express is running coach services from Bristol and Heathrow airport directly to the festival. Return tickets must be pre booked and are available online here.

There is also a regular bus link from Bristol airport called the "Bristol International Flyer" which can take you from the airport to Bristol Temple Meads railway station. Regular buses go from Temple Meads to the Festival Bus Station on our site".

A taxi sounds a massive pain - especially if the driver gets stuck - agreed fare or not, and squishing 4 plus equip into a cab isn't fun. I'd book National Express, and save the money that you spend on a cab - on booze and food within the festival, and not bother faffing around with getting it beforehand.

First of all, ive been told by about 4 different people that they arranged a price with a taxi driver outside the airport, so i didn't just pull this out of thin air. It has been done before, which is the only reason i mentioned it.

Obviously i'm completely clueless as to how long it takes to get there and how far it is etc. which is why i'm asking for advice as ive never been before.

We arrive at 9.40am on the Wednesday!

Here is my suggestion.

Get a cab from the airport to the nearest large supermarket, I am sure someone on here can let you know where that is. Do your essential supplies shop and then call another taxi (or if there are a few of you perhaps get 1st taxi to wait and some of you stay with the taxi while others shop)to take you to either the coach or rail station in Bristol. :)

Good luck!

Some of our group get taxis every year, depends on when they arrive (thursday and friday are extremely easy to get to the festival by taxi)...most of us hire cars in the airport and drive down ourselves (if you have someone who can drive, this is by far the easiest way...booked in advance it can cost as little as £130 for a big enough car for the duration of the festival...and between 4, that's close to the price of a taxi each way)...normally the taxi costs about 60 quid, sometimes the driver will agree to fix a price beforehand, other times the meter is on. There's a number of places to stop and get food/drink supplies between the airport and the festival. 9.40am on wednesday will be reasonably busy though...last year we drove straight into the festival, never hit traffic once, took us about an hour including a pitstop for supplies...but, that was about 2pm on wednesday when a lot of people were already onsite for the match. The year before, we were stuck for about an hour in traffic after coming down the A38 (our friends came in the other way and were 10 hours plus in a traffic jam)...if you were going to get a bus directly from the airport to the site (I believe there's a national express bus), my advice would be to pick up some spirits in your departure airport (remember to decant into a plastic bottle before you arrive on site!)...I never bother bringing food, there's just too many nice places to eat on site anyway! but nibbles can also be bought in your departure airport...don't worry, it seems stressful, but you'll get there! :)

yeh sorry typo on mileage,meant to say possibly 80 to 90 mins if traffic reasonable.the mileage is fairly irrelevant its the time taken to travel is the bar steward.

balance you have is whether to stop and get supplies or not,personally I would,beer up to 4 quid a pint on site,for convenience more than cost

I got a taxi on the Wednesday morning from Bristol airport in 2005. Think we arrived around around 7 in the morning or thereabouts from Dublin. It took around 30 - 40 minutes and cost about £40. This was before the days when the world and his wife were there for Wednesday morning opening. We got dropped off and were able to stroll onto an almost empty site for my first Glasto :)

We prebooked and paid for the taxi in advance with a national company rather than a local one. I just googled airport taxis Bristol for you and it quoted £38.

in that case these four separate people must have said how much it cost them.{ and did they say which day and the time as it does affect so much - traffic will be more heavy on the Wednesday compared to the Thursday or Friday }

I have been going since 1979 and I know how the traffic is from various directions and if I was a taxi driver there is no way would I accept a fixed price unless I factored it in my favour and take a gamble.

If you are so confident why are you asking for advice ?

No one can predict the future and some years you can drive straight in and other years you can be stuck in a queue for hours - its not like driving in London where a car can divert if they hit a traffic jam - once a vehicle is on a certain road they don't have any choice hence why I suspect that you are not going to find a taxi driver who will give you a fixed price { well a price that is fair for the distance and time }

They may offer a compromise - a fixed price providing there is no traffic jams.

These access roads are tiny and all it takes is someone to break down and all of a sudden you have a major traffic jam.

When we were stuck a few years ago people were getting off the coach and going into a pub and having a meal and by the time they walked back on the coach the coach had moved twenty feet.

I am not claiming it will be like that this year because I cannot see into the future. { and neither can a taxi driver be confident to take a fixed hire fee }

Its difficult enough to get a taxi to drive close to Glastonbury due to the fact that he knows no one is going to be leaving so any driver has to factor that in.

If its a normal black cab you don't have a choice as they will have the meter clocking away.

If its a mini cab then they will not see it as a so much per mile journey as there is so many factors that have to be taken into account.

The problem when you get friends telling you stuff is they leave out minor details as to which day and the time and how many taxi's they had to speak to.

Just humour me here - catch your taxi to a local asda and as you are leaving ask him if you can fix a price in advance for him to drop you at Glastonbury and wait for his reaction.

Its wanting the fixed price that is the problem because if the driver meets a traffic jam he knows it will not clear in minuets so he could potentially lose £ 100 +

If you were going a lot earlier then that would change the situation and would make it a bit more predictable.

I used to drive every year it was on and there is no way I would arrive in the daytime and I had a staff pass stuck on the car so was able to use roads others could not use - I would aim to arrive very early and when all set up I would wander up to the main road just to watch the traffic build up.

Anyway you appear to have listened so have a good Glastonbury

someone on this board showed a image of the queue on the outside gate when people waited overnight - if you have a copy please post it as this will give the OP some idea what the queue is like before the gates opened.

If say you ask someone at Glastonbury how long will it take to get from say the Pyramid stage to the Other Stage ' walking ' you will get widely varying answers because it all depends at what time they walked { and also the ground conditions } - I can do it in under ten minuets but only because I have a back stage Compound pass so I can cut across but when there is bands ending so people are moving from one stage to the next a person who does not have a pass it can slow that journey down to nearly a hour { and 50 % more if its really muddy } so two people doing the same journey can be out by as much as 80 minuets .

Ask them again a few crucial questions and you may find out they never travelled on the same day or the same time.
