Role Model
Shit bands aside - and this question probably deserves a thread in itself - but how many people do you think on here are going JUST because it's routine, because it's something they do as a tradition, rather than because they like the bands and cling to hope that they will find something to do? Lithium05
A comment in the "tickets still available" thread made me laugh. Something about tickets selling slower because people were just out of Uni and looking for jobs and therefore broke, like only people of that age go, not anyone older or younger

Role Model
Yeah that's moronic seeing as I'd say the majority are younger than that these days.
Lithium05
Indeed, although there are quite a few mid-twenties who are the sort of louts you see starting fights in town centres up and down the country on a Saturday night, that 10 years ago would have been nowhere near the festival circuit. I hate what Reading's become now considering all the good times that I've had there.
theramm
People were slating Download's line-up but when you put Download's into days & stages it pi$$es over Leeds this year. I'll take Pendulum, SOAD & Linkin Park over MCR, Pulp & Muse plus at Leeds (undercard) I'd see Deftones, Offspring, Jimmy Eat World, Madness, Seasick Steve, Interpol & whatever the Lock-Up has to offer. At Download (undercard so far announced) I'll check out Puddle of Mudd, The Damned Things, Alter Bridge, Korn/The Darkness (not decided), Skunk Anansie, Down, Avenged Sevenfold, Clutch, Rise to Remain, The Gaslight Anthem, Disturbed & The Cult. Download's winning with ease so far.
rexclark
........ In your opinion. I think the Download line up's pish. A few decent acts surrounded by a load of mediocre rubbish. But thats the difference, I don't expect festivals to be aimed at my personal tastes. I can see why alot of people aren't happy with the line up but on the reverse alot will be. I'm over the moon Pulp are playing and there's loads of acts i'm very happy with. The line up has great variation this year, a good mix of musical genres. Yes it might not be to everyones tastes and it may well not sell out but i'm sure everyone who does have a ticket will have an amazing weekend. I personally can't wait. rexclark
I don't know.... If you look at it in terms of established acts rather than flavours of the month Download wins pretty much every time, I've heard nothing of Beady Eye, White Lies, The National, Crystal Castles, The Midnight Beast, The Horrors, Elbow or 2Manydjs (that I'm aware of) yet the bands in their spots on the Download line-up are pretty much household names: Def Lepperd - MCR The Darkness - 30STM Alter Bridge - The Offspring Pendulum - Beady Eye Korn - White Lies Danzig - The Horrors System of a Down - The Strokes Avenged Sevenfold - Pulp Skunk Anansie - The National Alice Cooper - Janes Addiction Twisted Sister - Crystal Castles Funeral for a Friend - The Midnight Beast Linkin Park - Muse Bullet For My Valentine - Elbow Disturbed - Interpol Rob Zombie - 2Manydjs The Cult - The Streets Frank Turner - Peter Doherty The Offspring and Alter Bridge would divide opinion but I'd say it's pretty close with The Offspring edging it, System and The Strokes are both poster childs of their respective genres, Linkin Park and Muse attract a similar type of music fan (those who think they're well alternative for listening to them) and I'm a fan of neither so I'm calling that a tie. The only clear victory is Pulp over Avenged Sevenfold (in terms of an established name, I would be watching A7X given the option). The second stage friday is a no brainer, and I don't even like Pendulum!
Lithium05
You've never heard of Beady Eye? Never heard of a small band called Oasis? And you've never heard of Elbow? They are far bigger than Bullet For My Valentine. Just because you've not heard of these acts hardly meand they aren't big. It just means you need to broaden my horizons. mattl
I would disagree, the Download line up is full of acts more popular if you're a metal fan not the general music listening public. Plus alot of those acts are dinosaurs, nothing wrong with that, I love a bit of classic rock but alot of those acts haven't been relevent since the 80s. You've never heard of Beady Eye? moshing
Me, it's always been the case though, after I turned 22. The music at Reading is aimed at the youth, those who read NME, I find it funny that people think the line up should and will always suit them! I'm 34 and been going since I was 19, I like/ know far less of the lineup like I did back then, I still have an ace time though and always find 2-3 new bands I've not seen before that I think are excellent
Banana Co
When FR took over in 2007 they decided to alternate the main genres of the weekend, year in, year out. 2007 was mainly Indie, 2008 was American rock/ metal, 2009 was mainly indie again, then last year we had American rock like GnR (shit) and Blink (shit). Arcade Fire were easily the best band last year. They are not typical American shite they are Canadian excellence. You lot should have seen this coming. Now piss off to Sonisphere where you will see a lot of the same bands each year!!! Edited March 24, 2011 by ellibob198

rexclark
The festival is struggling this year simply because the overal line up is poor.
chappiepunk
Bollocks, there are numerous factors in why it hasn't sold out yet. The festival will eventually sell out so I don't see how you can say it's struggling. It has alot less to do with the line up and more to do with the price. But then that wouldn't suit everyones "shite line-up" agenda.
rexclark
I dont think anyone is saying the festival wont sell out, its mutually agreed it wil sell out when more of the lineup is announced. Its more the case of tickets still being available, and I genuinely feel this is down to the line up choices, and not to do with the price. chappiepunk
But why does it matter when it sells out? We agree it will sell out so it's a sucess, the organisers have got it right.
rexclark
Is it not seen as a bigger success if it sells out on the first night? Which is what has happened the last however many years. This says to me its not as succesful this year as it has been, and I believe this is down to the line up announced so far, and that only.
