I'm not suggesting it will sell out on this factor, just a few more tickets will be shifted. I would love to know how many tickets are still left unsold.

(btw Foos are killing it there right now, roll on 2012 if rumours are to be believed).

Not sure I agree,

I understand the theory, but watching Killers perform with just one album, they were really padding that set, and it was still that kind of "we know four of your songs play those" kind of crowd.

I think Pixies put on a set that deserved to headline alla Arcade Fire, and I think QOSTA and Killers and Kasabain had the draw side of things covered.

Now if you were to do it today, I'd have Pixies as the sub, but in 2004, with the reunion buzz, the big leave of absence and the atomsphere they created, I think choosing them to headline worked out pretty well.

I really don't think that's fair,

You were there in 2005 (good spot by the way typo) I take it? I think to say The Killers could have pulled off headlining given their lack of materiel and the workmanlike performance they put in isn't really true.

Plus the Festival sold out? So what's the problem?

They had all the bases covered, got a sell out, Pixies got a respectful dedicated crowd and the Killers did not have some mammoth crowd, bigger than the Pixies, just about, but I wouldn't say it was bigger than QOSTA. I remember moving forward for Killers after a hitting a wall of fans at QOSTA. Granted I was on the Stage Right side so I can't speak for the other end.

I thought QOSTA were appalling and Killers serviceable that year, I really don't think either could have pulled it off.

I agree about everything you said about Arcade Fire but the comparison is still valid, if your talking about having an acclaimed act having their crowd sucked away by a mainstream/of the day act Pendulum/Kasabian (my point is not Pixies should headline because Arcade Fire did, just that even the most legitimate of headliners who can play 75,000 capacity parks can have their crowd snatched away by a hot Radio One style act on the other stage, but I don't think that occurance is an argument against either a legend or the hot act of the day headlining).

I'm all in favour of giving bands a big break but I don't think that was the right moment for The Killers, they weren't as big as The Darkness were in terms of palpable mainstream hype, Glastonbury got the timing right (imo), they had the second album, they had the materiel they'd refined the live show added more sparkle (albeit terrible levels). Don't forget there is a very real danger to giving a band a slot too soon, and after watching The Killers (who I did very much enjoy) I think it could have really damaged/exposed the band (and we shouldn't just assume they'd draw that well against Kasabian).

But I really don't see what the issue is with 2005? They cater for most generations and if you hadn't heard of the Pixies you had a legitimate alternative, just as Bloc Party proved the perfect alternative for Maiden, it was a well put together line-up (imo), and it started Reading's streak of sell outs if I'm not mistaken (I may be someone can check).

And hey Pixies were in the final four of our best headliner vote, they went on to sub Isle Of Wight, and that performance is veveered, and there is value in creating moments, it's important to have fans saying "oh should have been their in 05 when Pixies played", you can't quantify it, but Reading "moments" are what festival legacies are built on.

But you know there is no right answer to this kind of thing, 2005 was a success and I think it worked out great for the three bands involved but we can disagree about the order.
