Sales are slow this year! WTF?

think they're gonna have to find a way to bring it at least below the £200 mark or they're gonna have serious problems. i think the fact that R/L hasn't sold out but V has shows the demographic of the festival quite well.

No way they'll drop prices, they might freeze them until others catch up/overtake. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the others put their prices up to £200 next year.

true, but they'd need some serious justification for increasing capacity if it doesn't end up selling out this year. which is a possibility, no matter how many people try to tell me 'oh it'll sell out eventually!'.

ah fair enough, but are they obliged to increase the capacity? as in, if this year doesn't sell out, i'd have thought they'd save money (security and maintenance of land etc) by just not increasing the capacity?

Increase the capacity and reduce the prices. That's what needs to be done.

I'm sure they'll take the increase if it's available, I doubt they'd want to be in a position of missing out on revenue next year by refusing the increase and then selling out. I imagine they'd risk that against having the increase and not selling out.

Have to agree with the above points. A price freeze, a payment plan and an earlier release of acts is the way forward to guarentee a sell out next year. A decent mix of old and new acts is also needed IMO.

I know there's no room, but an extra stage, the size of Lock Up or FR, added would perhaps justify £200 for me this year.

They should have a 3 day Lock Up and a 3 Day Dance. That would be good.

Agree with some of the points, but ultimately I still belive reading is all about the line up. This year isnt 'strong' as say the last three years have been and havent sold as a result.

I put a question forward to Melvin Benn once asking him the same thing and he said "that would lead to severely weakening the festival".

Probably because Creamfields is on at the same time so it already strains the dance acts available.

Looking forward to next year, I'd imagine it'll sell out regardless of any improvements. No Glasto to go to, lots of people looking for a festival experience will fall back on R+L.

Also if anyone's into conspiracy theories maybe there's a more indie feel this years festival so that people who usually go to Glasto look at R&L's line-up with the likes of Elbow, Pulp and The National and think "that looks like my sort of thing, I'll go there on my year off from Glastonbury".

To be honest the festival market is getting satuated with more and more festivals! If you get whats at the top of the listing then your festival is going to struggle. Smaller festivals are getting bigger acts now which cost a lot less and a just as much fun! Glastonbury is not happening next year so i can see many other festivals having a bumper year!
