Elizabeth Taylor

One of my claims to fame is that Elizabeth Taylor made me a cup of tea.

When Richard Burton died I was a journalist working for national newspapers in South Wales.

Burton was at the time married to Suzy Hunt and living in Switzerland but his family, called Jenkins and largely still living in terraced houses near Port Talbot, never took to Suzy.

So the family decided to have a memorial service in Port Talbot and Liz Taylor but not Suzy was invited.

After the service, full of passion, the family followed the traditional pattern of the women going back to the house to prepare the ham sandwiches while the men went down the club to sink a few pints. As good journalists we opted for the club.

During the session Burton's brother Graham became totally legless and late in the afternoon another hack and I carried him the best part of three quarters of a mile back to the house.

We knocked on the door and were let in and lowered Graham onto a settee. In the kitchen Liz Taylor had her sleeves rolled up, a pair of kitchen gloves on, and was doing the washing up.

She turned and smiled and said: "Seeing as you've so kindly brought him home the least I can do is make you a cup of tea."

So I sat down and Liz Taylor made me a cup of tea!

The story of how I got stoned out of my box with her son Michael Wilding Jnr at a hippy commune in West Wales will have to wait for another day.
