This exclusivity malark...

Right so we we're promised staggeringly good, exclusive headliners.

Now before you come in with, they're headline exclusives, don't. The fact we have the exclusivity of other festivals also rans as top dogs doesn't was with me, sorry. It's a complete shambles of an exclusivity agreements.

Now lets look at what we have...

Muse - Playing a special OoS show. Only UK&Ireland date. Well done, ticks all boxes.

Strokes - Big return. Past R/L headliners. However they're subs at Oxegen and playing the second stage and R1 Big Weekend. Sorry, I love these guys, but they don't live up to Melvin's billing.

Pulp - Playing everywhere. No.

MCR - Not even subbing at TitP or Oxegen. Subbing at R1 Big Weekend. Poorly received last time they played when they were arguably reaching there peak. A very poor booking.

Sorry but todays R1BW announcements coupled with T and Oxegen make Melvin look a fool and makes a mockery of the so called 'staggeringly good, exclusive headliners'.

the word exclusive doesnt mean alot this year im afraid. You got pendulum playing "london exclusive wtf", you got pj harvey paying bestival as exclusiv uk festival date although she playing the atp ill be your mirror festival.

what was melvin suposed to say that the headliners were a mass of predictability? michael eavis says the glastonbury festival is the best every year.

you pay your money take your chances, which is why im giving r&l a wide berth this year.

Hey, this is PULP's only northern England gig of the year. Haha.

Wonder what he'll say next. Probably declare that all the bands are a "Reading" exclusive, meaning it's their only festivals in Reading they're playing this year.

I'm not commenting on the general theme you've put forwards (it's of little interest to me, I'll be elsewhere that weekend), but I'd say you're wrong about MCR (and no, I'm not a fan, I couldn't care less about them).

I would say it's pretty certain that they're at more of a peak now than they've been previously, based on two particular things - winning both "best album" and "worst album" at the nme awards.

While "worst album" isn't positive, it does I reckon help prove that they're pretty big. After all, it's nearly always one of the bigger bands that provokes people to vote nasty for them.

I personally don't give two hoots about exclusivity. Bar MCR I'm very happy with the 'four headliners', and think they all look very strong. Suprised about seeing Strokes at R1 Big Weekend in the position they're in, but they're definately worthy of headlining a major UK Festival.

Which is why their arena tour struggled and the album bombed.

Winning some meaningless awards doesn't make them big.

They were selling out arena tours and getting number 1 records in 2007. Their first proper tour in 3 and a half years had A LOT of empty seats outside London - they don't sell enough tickets to headline anymore.

It doesn't necessarily work as you're presuming.

I'm just theorising now - I'm not working from any particular fact - but it might be the case that they're big with a particular age-range who either find it more difficult to afford tickets than other age-ranges, and/or who find it more difficult to access their shows than other age-ranges. And it might be the case (I'm theorising, remember :)) that those people will find a festival more accessible.

Having said all that, tickets haven't sold as well this year, and while I'm sure there's other reasons for why, the choice of headliners clearly hasn't gone down as well as it might have. But at the same time if it's not worked out well then I'm sure it's down to a cock-up somehow and not design - after all, I doubt FR have tried to not sell all the tickets they could.

Is everyone here new to R&L? Melvin talks shit about the fest every year. there's no need to get your knickers in a twist about what he said.

The line up is there in black and white, you either like it or you don't. It shouldn't matter where acts are playing at other fests. Every fest should be judged on it's own merits especially if it's a completely different type of festival.

Who gives a shit if they are or are not exclusive. Strokes and Muse are two huge bands and they will put on a f**king good show. The Strokes headlining INMWT stage does not make much sense but if you are able to get them then you would definitely get them. I suppose they have a new album and it's good to have a great headliner for that.
