I don't agree that they don't fit the reading and Leeds crowd. In the silent disco last year, for example, everyone seemed to know maybe tomorrow, Dakota and have a nice day. Obviously this isn't representative of the whole festival, but even then I think they'd pull a good crowd (although I am biased as they are probably my favourite band).

I think the reason they haven't been booked is because their last big studio album was 2005. They are currently in the studio recording a new album, so there isn't really any reason they would be booked as sub (which they would want to be - considering they have no new material to promote).

if they would of split up then reformed to do a handfull of festivals this summer like pulp, then they would be hot property but there not because they do giggs nearly every year witch makes them slighty tiresome to the booker.

pulp havent had anything new out in years, there just living off the fact everyone wants to see them again witch is great for us because we get to see a great band. maybe the phonics should just go way for a few years.. then come back instead of trying to carve out another album because it would have to be some bluddy good album for them to regain there big rock status - they might of once had.

I dont know, maybe the phonics enjoy regular touring and arent bothered about reunion cash in. You look at some bands like blink and libertines who are very much into the fame and money. I think phonics arent as bothered about that side of things and will continue playing, even if it means eventually playing smaller venues.

But they headlined in 2000. After that they got bigger, and wouldn't have come back to the festival if it werent to headline. This ruled them out of returning for the next few years, as but for a few exceptions, R+L usually wait a while before having a repeat headliner (I think).

Like I say, I'm probably biased, but I still think that they fit teh R+L demograph, and there isn't really a particular reason they haven't been booked, they have just never really been available. (could be wrong though)
