2012 Line Up

It's about context this one. The first V Festival in 1996 was actually just an extension of two massive Pulp gigs. They were at the height of their fame, and approached Virgin with the idea for the shows, and then added extra acts and stages and even a second day in Chelmsford, and it became V Festival.

There is no chance, I mean no chance, of them continuing to tour in 2012 (which will probably be their last year) only to revisit the festival that they started in a sublining slot. When they started it, they were the star attraction, and it was the biggest weekend of their careers. Why would they ever want to finish up their career by returning to do a support show for Lady Gaga or Coldplay?

The only reason they co-headlined R+L (a co-headliner is still a headliner by the way!) was because they couldn't offer exclusivity because they wanted to play other shows. In the same way, this is why they didn't headline Glastonbury last year, because they wanted to play other festival shows (I think they needed the R+L payday, and I don't blame them). Equally, at Isle Of Wight, they were booked for a headliners fee and announced (if not billed) as a headline act (in this case, apparently, because John Giddings had already booked KOL, Foos and Kasabian prior to the reunion announcement, but didn't want to miss out on having Pulp). T is a different kettle of fish because their lineup is all huge names. If Pulp had given R+L exclusivity, they would have been out-and-out headliners. They weren't given a co-headlining slot because organsiers thought 'well, they just dont have the same body of work as My Chemical Romance.'

Yeah, the 1995 Glastonbury performance made them definitely, but nobody had bought tickets with the intention of seeing them. My contention was that V was their commercial peak, as that's when thousands of people went to two different events specifically to see them as the headline act.

I agree that they're not an arrogant bunch, but this is a band that's been going since the 70s. It's their lifes work, they'll want to go out on a high, and returning to specifically V Festival as anything other than a headliner seems to send out exactly the wrong message. Obviously they're not as big as they used to be, but I can't see any reason why they'd play a final festival show that excplicitly highlighted that fact. I think it's far more likely that, if they play a festival at all, it'll be one that they can headline.

Fair comment, I hadn't even considered the possibility that they'd contiune beyond this year!

I mean, with Russell Seniors fear of flying I can't see them continuing to tour further afield for much longer. That, combined with the rumours of a big Sheffield show this year... which sounds very finite to me...

Who knows? Jarvis Cocker did say at the beginning of the reunion that there may be another album, so perhaps they could just pick up where they left off as a fully functioning recording and touring band! I wouldn't be aggreved at that prospect :)

Happy Mondays are back together, wonder if the will play, though when I saw SWR couple of years back there were lots of Tinnie Tempah fans there a bit bemused with what they were seeing, V will have to think about when acts are on a bit more, the clash of Madchester vs whatever crap Tinnie Tempah is was not great! Similar happened with Glasvegas and Chase and Status I think last year!

James are doing a few festivals, Inspiral Carpets also back together, bet Snow Patrol will play, maybe Biffy will be back as well.

Just praying for a more Indie/rock inspired line up

If it went back to indie/rock kind of line-ups I'd have to consider going again...having sworn that I never would. Not solely because of the music, but the kind of crowd it was attracting the last few years I went was doing me head in. Loads of drunk chav knobheads bashing into people after having a sniff of Strongbow does not an enjoyable weekend make.

I'm pretty fond of a sniff of the old 'bow. The sweet nectar. I'd like to see some psych-drone stuff in the line up. I 've been listen to alot of otherworldly turkish freakout from the seventies. Maybe if they got seasick steve to play some records ........

i don;'t know what im really rtrying to say here.

its monday morning and Im at work to be honest. I would watch anyone. just some interesting bands that would promote a wide ecceltic mix of audience. it's always the best way to be honest.
