Hey all.

Hope you're enjoying the wonderful sunshine!

I'm doing my dissertation on Festival Style, and why it has become as essential and commercial as it is.

Why are there all these articles in magazines about how to look good at festivals, and why do shops have entire sections dedicated to it in the summer months?

My theory is that people do it as it is viewed that you know less about the 'festival ways' if you don't dress in wellington boots, short denim shorts and some kind of headgear.

What do you think?

Please answer the poll and leave some comments.

I'd really appreciate some feedback!

Thank you!

I buy clothes for functionality but like them to look good too. I like bright coloured t-shirts for daytime, and have just bought a bright blue fleece for night-time, although mainly because it is warm and a proper hiking fleece.

I also wear combats, and have just bought a pair which can be converted in to shorts, this way I can carry the legs with me in my daybag, rather than going back to the tent to change in to trousers when the weather gets cold.

I've worn fancy-dress / costume a couple of times, and buy material which my very talented friend then turns in to amazing costumes for me.

I always wear my crappest clobber to festivals (although, admittedly, there's very little difference between my best and worst clothes) - this being a legacy of pre-superfence at glasto days when there was a lot more pilfering from tents that went on - as such, i didn't want anything decent to go awol so i just wore/brought clothes that i'd not be too gutted if they went walkabout. Also, because of the unpredicatble festival weather, i didn't/don't want anything decent to get shat up with mud etc. so that's another reason for 'dressing down'. Finally, and i can recognise this is my own prejudice, i think it's a bit twatty to treat a festival like a 'fashion parade' - a decent festival for me is one where any fashion-nazis are left outside and it's all anbout the music/entertainment and meeting new and interesting people and having a good time - not about how you or anyone else looks.

Functionality and comfort come first. I maybe wear somewhat more colourful clothes at festivals but that's just a reaction to the necessary conformity of everyday life.

I'm not aware of festival style so I obviously don't read the right magazines.
