Bands you think you should like, but you dont

Having this conversation in the pub yesterday. The types of bands we were thinking were

1. Bands that you hear on the radio, that sound like the type of music you normally like, you think they will grow on you but they never do.

2. Bands that friends who have very similar music tastes like but you just cant get into.

3. Bands that are described as sounding like acts you love but make no impression on you.

My choices were death cab for cutie, macabees and idlewild. Everything about these bands suggest I should love them, but despite putting the effort in I just cant get into their music. Any other opinions?

I'm having trouble with this....I think I spend more time just listening exclusively to bands I know I like*, I don't honestly care enough to remember any bands or songs that I dislike. Maybe Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers - everyone talks them up, and they are huge, and I don't understand why they're so big, but then again they have the odd belter of a tune. I suppose I never remember bands that I think are universally awful.

*not listening to the radio, like, ever, helps me achieve this.

anyone ever been put off a band after they saw them live? happened to me when I saw porcupine tree live. it was the most sterile, note perfect, album sounding gig I have ever witnessed, and as such completely sullied my opinion of steve wilsons output. irrational and mental I know, but I genuinely cant listen to them any more....
