Mahdnyw
After having a heated debate with friends last night, I thought I'd pose the question to you guys You all seem fairly clued up on the state of this country and it's politics. So Great Britain? Is it still great in your eyes - if so why? and if not, why not? I'm in the NOT great camp, we've lost much of our means of production, most heavy industry is foreign owned and we are nothing more than USA's lapdog (this is just a shortlist, we spent many hours discussing this) Over to you edit - I realise that the Great in the title does not refer to it being the best, but this was the gist of our discussion. worm
As it's still the biggest of all of the Isles of Brittania, then I'd have to say yes.

brighteyes
Got some good beaches and countryside so I voted yes. Politics didn't really enter my analysis, but why should it.

Mahdnyw
the question was is it great? if it's no better or worse than other places, why would it be called great the planet is great, mostly
Uncle Liam
A definitive no. Its a country which lives of past 'glories', failing to accept change and a result is at the start of a long, continuous decline. Think of it like this. The UK has a 'special relationship' with the US. How come this 'special relationship' is never talked about in the US, yet bleated here ad nauseam? Kyelo
I say no. Great Britain to me was the pinnacle of the empire which is long gone. Great Britain, Britain and 'British' don't exist to me these days. They are just generic terms that have become 2nd nature to us.

Kyelo
But 'Great Britain' only ever referred to the main island didn't it? Which still exists just the same.

worm
But 'Great Britain' only ever referred to the main island didn't it? Which still exists just the same. It's second nature to us because it's its name, and 'British' is used because we are British... makes sense really...

Banana Co
I'd have to say that Britain still holds it's title as Great. We create some of the best (if not, then the best) music. Greatest films, greatest actors, greatest comedians, greatest writers, greatest everything. I love England! Easily the friendliest people. When I went travelling, everyone was so rude at pretty much every country I visited.

Banana Co
That in a crunch is why, to me, Great Britain does not exist. When people think of Britain it is England they mean.
