The Top 5

Hi all

In another attempt to galvanise some activity on this, the loveliest of 'boards, I thought I'd do a bit of a High Fidelity style game.

'Rules'

(not draconian, but let's try to keep some order here)

1. List the TOP 5 acts from the EOTR 2011 line up that you DID NOT KNOW/HAD NOT HEARD prior to this year's line up announcements that you are MOST excited about seeing at the festival

2. They have to be genuinely NEW to you - i.e. 'I've only got ONE of their 12 albums...' does NOT count

3. Stick to FIVE only!

4. There's no need to rank them, but you can if you want to

5. If you 'really can't decide between X and Y'...boo hoo...try harder...FIVE ONLY

6. Let's have a heated debate about people's answers, including light-hearted ridicule etc

7. I suggest you open the line-up page at the same time as a handy reference tool (TOP TIP)

8. Feel free to re-post as the next few months go by and your listening changes your list. Remember it's the TOP 5 so no additions, just substitutions!

9. Don't feel embarrassed to list acts that you think you 'should' have known before (ref: Beirut for me, below!)

Here're mine:

(in no particular order)

The Deadly Syndrome

tUnE-yArDs

Beirut

Other Lives

Diagrams

So, whatcha got?

Hmmm, I'm going to go with:

1) The Deadly Syndrome

2) Lykke Li

3) Kurt Vile

4) Emmanuel & The Fear

5) James Yorkston

Lykke Li and James Yorkston I was aware of before they were announced, but I'd never listened to them. Kurt Vile would have hit my radar, based on associates with similar tastes recommending him. The other two were completely new names to me.

There's still quite a lot on the bill that I haven't really studied yet, and also quite a lot that I was already familiar with.

Dan mangan

caitlin rose

joan as policewoman*

emmanuel and the fear

the deadly syndrome

* I had heard the first album - didn't like it, still don't.....but the new album is just fabulous (quite like the second, which i hadn't heard, too now). If this makes her not count it'll have to be other lives.

1. The Deadly Syndrome

2. Slow Down, Molasses

3. This Is The Kit

4. Wooden Shjips

5. tUnE-yArDs

My views on the headliners remain resolutely entrenched, so let's hear it for the little people. Though I have just thrown Micah P. Hinson and the "Pioneer Saboteurs" in the bin.

Grrrrrr football!!!! Stevenage beat Torquay, my new home v my old home :(

Well I quite like the Walkmen, def growning on me, but in fairness there are only 5 bands that I hadn't heard before that I would bother to go and see....so far.

And Geof I loved Joan As Policewoman, saw her in 09 in Bristol and she was lovely. Previous two lps are both favs of me and Fliss, however when I saw her this year I thought she had gone a bit mainstream rock for me, and lost her sweetness.

In no particular order:

TuNE-yARdS

Dan Mangan

Sarabeth Tucek

Rue Royale

Treelight for Sunlight

If I might add my 2p on the Walkmen (and break my "if you can't say anything positive, don't say anything" rule), I saw them last year, supporting the Black Keys, and they didn't do anything for me. Maybe they've improved since then?

Ok I listened to The Deadly Syndrome and quite like Eucalyptus.... Ben I said that there are only 5 I have liked that I hadn't heard of before so far, please pay attention!

Lykke Li

Wild beasts

Mogwai

Er.. That's it at the moment. I gave The Walkmen a go but they did nothing for me.

There are quite a few who I have re-investigated since they were announced, and gone on to become favourites, but nothing completely new to me.

When did Wingwalker get added to the line up? I'm not good with heights but I think they are really over the top! Armrest.... I saw last year at the Union Chapel supporting Elbow

Anyway...I think I may have broken the rules....Dry The River already had on 7" but not listened to,.... "upperlowercase-song-where you build ships or keep your building materials" had heard on R6, ...and Phil has a 10" of Treefightfor sunlight which he sometimes gets out for me to play with! B):rolleyes:

That's astonishing! You are a victim of your own, prolific listening powers Sue! No wonder you're never quite as excitable as me about the line-up...most of it's old hat!

hi, very pleased to have 'discovered' so many lovely bands, since taking the decision to visit EOTR this year..only because we have already taken our daughter out of school 'enough times' already. Ta for a festival during school hols :)

anyhoo...a recent footy injury gave me loads of extra time (ho-ho) to have a listen to the 95% (-ish ) of the bill that I hadn't heard before..very pleased to find:

The Black Angels

Emanuel & the Fear

Lia Ices

Wooden Shjips

Kurt Vile

can i list another 5 in about 5 minutes? ta-ra for a bit.
