Reading OR Leeds?

Went to Leeds in '07 and Reading the past 3 years (living only 40 mins away from the site).

Biggest notable difference is the site - Leeds seemed to be in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fields/trees. It gave it more of a secluded feel, which i guess is good for anyone wanting to really get away for the bank holiday weekend. Reading on the other hand is literally in the middle of Reading. Which is brilliant as you can nip into town for a burger/tescos/shower/poo etc. So, both are very different in terms of location, but each have their advantages over the other.

In terms of general atmosphere, I can't really remember Leeds as I was fairly young and blown away by it all! But I do remember being on my own for a fair amount of the time (my big sis was into different bands...) and I found it fairly easy to chat to people in the crowd and the majority of people were very friendly. Oh, and northern haha! I Also remember there being fires and the usual crazy people on sunday night but we had a coach booked for late sunday night so didn't catch the bulk of it.

Reading atmosphere is also awesome for the most part. My biggest annoyance these days are the people you see who are clearly not there to enjoy the bulk of the music and who are there just to drop pills/get ridiculously pissed and party but fair enough I guess, if they've paid for a ticket then they can do what they want! And these kinds of people you will find at both festivals, so it not exclusive to Reading.

Oh, and in terms of bands saying 'X festival is better than Y festival' - they do it at both to get teh crowd on their side. Or, they are cheeky and say the opposite to get them fired up!! I'm sure you've been to a gig when the band are like 'you guys are the best/best gig evarrr!' In all honesty, I couldn't see any notable difference in terms of the crowd atmosphere and I have had wicked times at both.

Hope this clears things up for you a bit!

Guess each fest maybe has a difference in music taste, and you get different crowds each year as the line up genres do mix up a bit each year,so one band might find itself more popular at one site than at the other and therefore think one site of the festival is better than the other.

Leeds has its advantage of being outside of the town,so not as harshly restriced for noise from the stages, where reading is in the city, but i guess their advantage is that there closer to shops ect, where in Leeds fest you have to hop on a shuttle bus to get more supplies.

I've been to 1 Reading and 11 Leeds so you can guess what one I prefer.;)

Leeds is far easier for me to get to from Scotland so that's one plus for me.

I also really enjoy the fact it's in the middle of nowhere (which can be a minus point for some) I love being away from everything and forgetting about normal life. The fact it's in the middle of nowhere means it can go on later. The afterhours entertainment goes on till 6am which is amazing, because of Reading's location you can't have stuff that late there.

By the sound of it a lot of the Sunday-night calamities have calmed down significantly at both sites, which seemed to affect a lot of peoples decisions on which to go to.

Other than that, Reading bands play til about half an hour later, meaning some of the light shows for the subs are better, and Leeds has DJ's playing round the site til 6am (which is an advantage of being in the country), though obviously Reading being in the town can be a big plus too.

I haven't been to Reading so I can't really judge but that seems to be all the real differences between the two.

Leeds is obviously better because it's in the north ;)

Really though I think the only difference is the positioning. I've never been Reading, but I can imagine it is easy to go into the town during the day to go Tesco or something, but also before the festival to the pub or even after the bands have finished for a night out. But at Leeds all of this is on site for you (although I think they could do with a pub-like tent).

Go to whichever is closest, unless you'd massively prefer to be out in the sticks or right in a town

All the balls about norths and souths is just spouted by twats who've never actually been out of their home town for more than a day, basically you get good folk and tossers and both fests will have their fair share of both
