Manchester Evening News: Man in custody over stabbing of suspected burglar was 'top bloke' from the local pub

Stunned neighbours know Peter Flanagan as a quiet, professional man who worked as an engineer and enjoyed a drink in his local.

Last night the 59-year-old was in police custody, arrested on suspicion of murder after an intruder was stabbed to death at his home – his 27-year-old son Neil and Neil’s girlfriend, 21, who were arrested with him were released without charge this morning.

Friends of Mr Flanagan – an engineer by trade – described him as a ‘top bloke’ who valued his privacy.

A police source told us he was regarded as an upstanding community member.

This is such a non-thread. Just because 24 hour news fills us in all day long doesn't mean we can't wait a few days for justice to be done, as it clearly has here.

Peter Dow, you're mental. You've jumped on any old story to back up your republican beliefs, a story that ran it's course justly without your wild accusations. Go away.

At last the police have managed to figure it out and have released the last of the 3 they should never have taken into custody in the first place.

Enjoy your freedom Peter Flanagan, you have fought for it and won it and we salute you! :D

or...

maybe the police did their duty, arrested a man who had killed another man, investigated the circumstances and decided from the evidence that there was no case to answer?

Or can we all randomly kill anyone in our house, claim they're a burglar, and the police should go 'oh that's ok then'

I'm yet to work out quite how or why an elected government lead by an separately elected leader would do anything radically different from what elected government after elected government after elected government have done to this point

I am a little concerned over recent announcements over the right to defend your home and what you can do without prosecution. Many burglars may now go tooled up who would not have done before. I know some police forces countenance making some noise and staying put in your bedroom and ringing the police, especially if you are on your own.

From what I understand the mass majority of burglars just want to be off on their toes if discovered. Many seem to not want to wield a weapon on account of the repercussions, but if they stand a chance of been twatted with a cricket bat I can see some escalating things. As you mention more fear more risk.

At the end of the day defending yourself is totally different to defending your property. Is a tele worth the risk of being stabbed??

It is the Queen's fault because as Queen, monarch and head of state of a kingdom, she is 100% in the way of elected presidents of republics as heads of states.

What would a good English or British President have done here?

The president would have told the police not to arrest anyone without probable cause that they had committed a crime.

Right now, it looks probable that there was no crime, only an incident of self-defence leading to a death.

So the 3 residents of the house under attack would never have been arrested by police who would listen to what the president had told them before.

If the police ignored the president's earlier advice then a president would also have sent the military to free the 3 now wrongly under arrest and arrest the police for ignoring the president's orders and for arresting people without probable cause which itself should be an arrestable offence.

The president could not do any of that because we are being forced to have a Queen, so the Queen is to blame, as is any other royal, such as Prince Charles who wants to take over from the Queen as monarch one day.
