Reducing media ownership is more complicated than it might at first seem. To begin with you need to define media ownership. It's not as simple as saying one man and his family shouldn't control four (now three thanks to the closure of the NoW) national papers.

If you also take into account local papers, including weeklies and freesheets, TV & radio stations and magazines then you need to question the reach of:

Trinity Mirror - The Daily & Sunday Mirror plus 240 regional newspapers. More than half the UK population buys one of its papers every day.

The Gannett Group - The largest newspaper group in the world, far bigger than Murdoch's empire. Last year the Gannett Group’s income topped $6.3 billion. It employs more than 52,000 people, publishes 101 daily newspapers in the USA, owns 300 papers in Britain and has 22 TV stations and 600 other publications worldwide. Conspiracy theorists may like the fact that the group's HQ is in Arlington, Virgina - also home to the CIA.

GCap Media Group, which owns 150 UK radio stations.

Guardian Media Group - owners of The Guardian and Observer but also owns Real Radio stations in Wales, Scotland and Yorkshire. The group also owns more than 50 regional newspapers.

Printing, especially colour printing of newspapers, requires a collossal investment in printing plant which can only be justified by printing lots of titles. That's why groups have merged and set up regional printing centres to spread the cost but a consequence has been a concentration of ownership.

MPs recalled.

What's the betting that they'll just have a bit of a solemn sounding chin wag, and then just bugger off on their hols for six weeks anyway, hoping that the dust will settle?

Edit: Just read this as well. It's really not The Mets week is it.

how long has Cameron got?

can't see it myself, no matter how deserving the corrupt bastard is of the sack.

Cos the issues are about the papers hacking and their corruption of the old bill. There's been no corruption by politicians with the press or the police, oh no.

It's just that Dave Moron likes to have people suspected of criminal activity round to Chequers for the weekend at every chance he has, and Rupert dropped round to Downing Street before Dave Moron had appointed his cabinet just for a cup of tea.

On this subject, let's be honest, they're all as bad as each other. How often do you think Milliband/Brown/Blair met Murdoch and other representatives of NI?

It's unfortunate (for DC) that it's happened on his watch.

Oh, I don't disagree - they're all as bad as each other. But it is apt that a situation engineered by Thatcher has come home to bite a Tory the hardest. :)

After all, Brookes isn't Blair's or Brown's regular horse-riding companion, and Blair or Brown didn't employ an already heavily tainted ex-editor in both a party and governmental position, nor invite him to stay the weekend after that ex-editor's integrity had very serious reasons to be doubted.

And while Blair and Brown both had Murdoch round on a regular basis, I don't think either of them managed to make him just about the first guy thru Downing Street's door after becoming PM.

So while Dave Moron has at the very least shown such poor judgement he's unfit to be PM, nothing will come of it because Labour are guilty of all the same things.
