In 2008 i got ripped off for tickets to the festival however with hindsight it is my fault i got scammed. however it has scarred me wanting to use ebay again as the source of tickets again i want to go to reading this year and the 140 asking price on ebay is reasonable, i just hope people can help me answer these questions:

1.If you have bought tickets in the past or this year your experiences

2.any tips on how to spot a scammer

3.questions to ask the sellers

4.any other advice on getting tickets for around 140 for the weekend or below

any help will me much appreciated

Thank You

I love ebay, I'm always getting cheap tixs.

When you see tickets don't bid straight away, add it to the watch list and bid last minute otherwise all you're going to do increase it's value.

Be aware of when you're paypal/credit card protection expires, credit card is 3 months and paypal is 45 days.

Ideally bid on tixs that are in hand.

Look at when they registered, the longer the better. If they registered the same day as the tixs go on sale it's more likely they are a fraudster, feedback is not always a true as serious cons make numerous accounts and leave feedback on them and R&L is less likely to faked as tixs aren't sold out so V etc would be more appealing to them for interest/profit.

You can always ask to see the confirmation email and if you're clever about it you can use it to contact the tix agent to double check their details.

i always look if theyve uploaded a picture or not, people who will "send tickets upon arrival" always sound dodgy to me

and try and not buy from users who have just made an account, although tickets from said users will tend to sell for slightly cheaper becuase of this

Stick to those with lots of positive feedback

Ensure they have the tickets already (everyone should this year, or you should at least be able to select those who already have them)

Pay imediately via Paypal, ensure they use tracked mail and give you the number ASAP.

If you follow the above, you should be fine.

I've never been ripped off on Ebay, I've never bought from anyone without a good rep though, I think this is the one key rule to follow

i recently bought tickets off ebay for latitude last weekend, got 2 weekend tickets for £155 which was ridiculous seeing as 1 weekend ticket was £170. i'll certainly be looking to do the same for reading. like others have said look for when the person joined ebay and how much feedback they have. leave it until the sunday/monday before reading to start bidding as that'll be cheapest but dont leave it too late so there's not enough time for the seller to send them to you

My plan with regards to eBay this year is to wait until about a week before the event, when there will probably be loads of tickets in hand with people desperate to shift them at any price.

Checking positive feedback and length of membership is good, but other than for touts (who I plan to avoid) checking number of items for sale is a pretty useful way of telling if someone's legit or not; if the the only thing a user is selling is a Reading ticket, it's not worth losing their account, or possibly getting trouble with the police if it's a scam.

Also, I plan on getting a ticket locally. I live around london, so anywhere near is manageable to pick up and pay by cash, ensuring safe delivery, which is vital in the very late stages.

I've done this for Sonisphere, this and last year, as well as a fair few gigs. I'll also be checking gumtree, as that's provided me with tickets in the past as well.

I have been scammed once, but that was when I bought Muse tickets about 4 months before the gig by someone with around 100 positive feedback reviews, which is a relatively low number when he was selling hundreds of tickets. Looking back, I can't believe how foolish I was, but I was only young ;)
