swede
Ive always been the sort of guy at festivals who doesnt mind talking to random strangers, whether it be around the camp, in queues to get into the arena or while watching bands. I took my in-laws to their first Glasto this year and my mother-in-law found it really weird how people she didnt know would just come up and start talking to her, it was hilarious to watch. So what are you, are you the kind of festival goer who likes a random conversation with a stranger or do you generally keep yourself to yourself, and if so why ? jump
I'm generally off talking to new people, sometimes it's talking to a guy I've just been in a pit with or just killing time as I talk to someone next to me in the line for the bar although I have find myself in trouble for (harmlessly) talking to people's girlfriends a lot recently. I have noticed there's starting to be a shift in mentality with the lot I camp with where they have less and less interest in talking with new people and would rather spend the night in our campsite. rexclark
I'm not a big fan of groups who are quite insular. It's not a good feeling when you try to talk to folk and all you get is a dirty look. Festivals are all about having fun, doing stuff you might not normally do and being yourself. I love talking to random people, you sometimes get the best conversations from them. You should always make an effort to talk to your neighbours and you can keep an eye out for eachother. mrtourette
I thought this was going to be about Rowntree's Randoms, I know they were handing out free samples last year and was hoping they would do the same this year.
swede
My favourite one was chatting to a huge scottish guy during The Specials at Glasto 09. A few of my mates were laughing as it was about my fourth or fifth random conversation of the day, and they're not quite as easy talking to people they dont know. Well this guy was huge with a long ginger beard and could be deemed as quite scary looking, as the conversation progressed we got onto the fact it was my stag weekend to which he went into both pockets on his jacket and said as he pulled them out in each hand "would you like some Jack Daniels and some charlie"....what a legend he was. danvb
Its great talking to randoms, more often happens at glasto, lovely little bits of banter and friendlyness with all sorts of people of all ages. It can be good at Leeds, quoting to each other a comedy quote or something like that randomly. first year in 07 we have good bunch of geordie bros to chat, who would just walk back and forth between camp areas and chat/mong away. Messi30
Depends if the random is annoying or not. Usually they are.
darth haggis
i initially thought that you were referring to the rowntrees randoms that they handed out by the bucketload the other year! thus, i will answer my preferred question. yes, they are awesome. edit: oh - just noticed mrtourette was on the same wavelength as myself! man i want some randoms... Rudzkii
Thank f**k I go to Leeds. Fair enough there isn't a local boozer for me to go a shit in but it's not all bad.
Jackmypie
I do it. Thursday night this year @ Glasto in the wow stage EVERYONE was talking to eachother and spreading the <3 was magic forgot who was playing at the time, think it was before Netsky . The only acts I saw where people were keeping to themselves were Tinie tempah and Beyonce. I guess they attracted a different type of crowd though. ar1
Rowntrees randons oh yes! Oh and randon people as long as I've had a drink it's great fun. Met two care home nurses who were amused by my t-shirt with turds on it one year they were great fun until I noticed one had a National Front tatoo..... Banana Co
When you're at the festival, pretty much everyone is up for chatting to new people. However; on the Monday afterwards I went out in the night cause it was free for wristband holders at one of the clubs. My mate went to talk to some guy about Reading and the dick replied "Shut up, festival prick!"
Sparticus
Randoms are fine, problem is most randoms you encounter are striking up conversation because they want a beer, a spliff, your box (for the females), the latter sort of randoms can get to f**k! Mega Ross
If you're an antisocial bastard f**k off, we don't need you. Is my general attitude. I hate this very british "keep to yourself" nonsense, lighten up and have some fun. I love talking to strangers, met some right good lads before. The Mean Bean
Meeting randoms and having a laugh is what the campsite is all about for me, if people kept themselves to themselves I'd probably just get a B&B. I only go in a group of about 5 or so each year but we always make sure we have a gazebo and a campfire so the neighbors and passers by will come and sit with us for a few cans. Usually the geordies are the friendliest, they must have something in the water over there because they seem to be about 99% sorted people.
