Can someone explain to me why/how the whole electoral vote thing works?I'm aware that winning certain states carries more 'votes' but I'm not clued up on why.

each state has a number of electoral college votes. It's those votes which elect the president, and not the votes that people make.

It's normally the case that a state allocates its electoral college votes on the basis of the public vote - but I have a feeling that a state doesn't have to do that in law (just in case the people vote 'wrong' ;)).

The electoral college votes are distributed around each state on a roughly proportionate basis with the number of voters, but it's not exact - which means that (as happened in 2000) it's possible for a candidate to get a majority of the public vote but not have a majority of the electoral college vote, and it's the majority of the electoral college vote which wins.

It's a warped version of democracy, like most are.
