Sziget 2012

I am getting very excited!! So far, there aren't the same amount of bands that I knew right away I'd like to see compared to last year. However the Spotify playlists are amazing and I have another 5 at least now that I definitely want to make it along to. I am really enjoying all the bands with brass sections, such good music to have on a summer's day at a festival!

In my opinion, what UK attendees have to remember is that, although the UK is clearly a big player on the world stage when it comes to music and a ridiculous amount of the acts announced so far are British, the Sziget organisers won't have British tastes at the forefront of their mind when they're booking, and neither should they. One look at that "flag corridor" last year representing all the countries with citizens at Sziget was amazing, and I went the whole week last year hearing a fellow British accent about twice (and seeing a Celtic top once!) I'm sure it will be different this year because of Glastonbury not being on but the organisers are far more likely to be catering to Dutch or Hungarian tastes which might make the line up or the billing of some acts seem a little odd to us :) But it will still be the best week of the year anyway!!

Hey, we can't help it that GB produces the best music!

/Discuss the hell out of that one..!

But we go because it isn't a British festival so the last thing we actually want is for it to be overrun with Brits. Which may seen nonsensical as we go there ourselves but you get my meaning. The vibe is much better, there's a much smaller (negligible) percentage of dickheads and it's better run (IMHO) than any of our own festivals. Plus you aren't up to your nuts in mud most of the time either. The lineup is always very heavily UK or USA biased but that still doesn't seem to attract more than a handful of us from the UK so rest easy :)

Oh and the bloke in the Newcastle shirt will probably be me :)

It's great isn't it!! Quick loo stop, grab a beer and back to the front of the main stage! I still can't get over we got to the front for Primal Scream a few years back with about 5 minutes to go no problem! You would have had to camp out for that spot at a UK festival!!

im looking forward to hearing all the different music there, its half the reason why im going, i have a very wide pallet, im loving the sziget playlist on spotify :D one of my fave bands of all time is rammstein and it was one of the best gigs ive ever been to, even though i only understand about 10% of what there saying! :D its all about the music :)

like the sound of the short gaps between bands thats always a pain, and i hate how english crowds just get so crowded and packed your practicly licking someones sweaty armpit, ruins the whole experiance

Day Zero is not always a day with one big headliner. Two years ago it was a reggae day, with The Wailers, UB40, Toots & The Maytals and The Aggrolites. Four years ago Day Zero was 'Rock Against Racism', but I don't remember who were on that day... Maybe this year the organisers choose for a theme day again.

On the other hand it could also be that this date is put on the Lacuna Coil website, because they don't know yet what day they'll be performing.

I guess we know more when Lacuna Coil gets confirmed by Sziget.

when do we think the next annoncement will be? will we be expecting to wait untill around the 25th again? or will they do an annoucemnt sooner with all the bands startin to self comfirm?

also how long roughly do the headliners get i read somewhere think it was on sziget news or something that headliners get around 90mins, subs get around 60-75 and normal bands around 45?

The usual schedule for the Main Stage is:

15.00-16.00 First act

16.30-17.30 Second act

18.00-19.15 Third act

19.45-21.00 Fourth act

21.30-23.00 Fifth act (headliner)

A new announcement could be following on Thursday, because it seems like a press conference is planned for that day. But personally I don't expect any acts will be announced at the press conference, because band announcements usually don't follow up that quick.

Last year at the press conference the plans of Vodafone, the main sponsor, to build a giant tower were announced, as well as the introduction of the Metapay cashless payment system. This year Vodafone is no longer sponsoring Sziget, so maybe a new sponsor will be announced...

From Sziget's Official Facebook...

We have quite some infos to share with you today. There will be a lot of changes in the structure of Sziget, so frequent visitors will have to relearn the Sziget map. We will tell you all about this later today...

But first, here are some exciting new acts:

Arena: Frittenbude, 1995, Grimus, Elektro Guzzi, Adam Beyer, The Advent vs. Industrialyzer live;

A38: Shaka Ponk, Yonderboi;

Roma Stage: Ferenc Snétberger’s students, Romengo, Fishtank Ensemble, O’Djila, Besh o droM, Etnorom, Nadara, The Barons of Tang, DJ Click, Caci Vorba, Vojasa, Gypsy Hill, Vodku, Söndörgő, Naat Veliov & The Original Kocani Orkestar, Dj Gaetano Fabri & Balkanhotsteppers, Robert Lakatos & a Rév, Parno Graszt and Fanfara Shavale;

Giant Street Theatre: Compagnie Pipotal presents Basculoscopia;

Street theatres: Cia La Tal, Blaas Of Glory, Teatro Correquetepillo, Buchty A Loutky.

Like we just told you, there will be lots of changes in the structure of Sziget. Not only will some stages change location, also some stages will disappear while some new stages will be presented too. Besides that there will be lots of new decorations and light installations. All these changes won't affect the old goals of the festival: the new structure will make the smaller venues more accessible, so even more emphasis is put on diversity.

What stages will change?

- The World Music Stage moves to where in previous years the Giant Street Theatre was. Also this stage is renamed into World Music Party Stage, with a focus on danceable world music. Instead of four acts per day this stage will now host five acts per day;

- The A38 Stage will move to the backside of the Main Stage and will this year host 7 gigs per day;

- The Party Arena will stay at the same location, but will have two extra slots per day, where it will host European bands, and therefore the name is now: 'Arena'.

- The Metal stage will disappear, but instead we will have Metal Day on Day Zero;

- Meduza will disappear too, but we try to provide an alternative in the A38 Stage, where each night there will be at least two top DJs;

- Giant Street Theatre will move to the location of the former Metal Stage;

- The Roma Stage will find its new venue next to theatre hill, opposite to the European Meeting Point;

- The Logical Games Tent will move to the former location of Octopus;

- The Multi Arts Venue moves to the former location of MR2 Hungarian Stage;

- MR2 Hungarian Stage will move to the former location of the World Music Stage;

- World Village will move to the location of the Blues Stage;

- The Sports Venue will move to the former location of the A38 Tent;

- Magic Mirror will return to its original location;

- On the former location of Meduza, we will this year welcome back the Luminarium.

More info to follow soon!

The following acts will be performing on Main Stage, the biggest stage of the festival:

Gocoo, Anti Flag, Viza, Noah and the Whale, The Subways, Glasvegas, Caro Emerald, The Vaccines, The Horrors, Paolo Nutini, Beatstakes, Friendly Fires, Two Door Cinema Club, Mando Diao, Hurts, The xx, LMFAO, Placebo, Korn, The Stone Roses and The Killers.

A few more acts are still to be announced.

A38’s huge tent is getting right at the center behind main stage, keeping its well known values during the days and the nights, but also offering a very strong electro program between 1AM and 5AM, designed to make up for the loss of the Meduza venue.

A38 will surely host the following acts:

Tiga, Dirthyphonics live, DJ Fresh, High Contrast featuring Selah Corbin & Dynamite MC, Shaka Ponk, Yonderboi, Flying Lotus, The Black Seeds, Jungle by Night, Heideroosjes, Anna Calvi, Wild Beasts, Kakkmaddafakka, Katzenjammer, dEUS, Fink, Lamb, Ministry, Bebel Gilberto, The Ting Tings, Dope D.O.D, Crookers, Modeselektor and Azari & III.

Arena, the other megatent of the festival, spreading its program in 4 slots daily in a bigger than ever venue. Arena is starting already at 4PM each day and as a startup hosts bands that would have probably played on the Europe Stage last year. These are the so-called “Europe slots”, presenting acts that are well known back home, but still waiting for their big international breakthrough, including I Cani (ITA), Frittenbude (GER), 1995 (FRA), In Golden Tears (GER), Grimus (ROM), Elektro Guzzi (AUT), Chef’s Special (NED), Teatro Degli Orrori (ITA), Danakil (FRA) and Amon Amarth (FIN).

The 7.30PM slot names for Arena that have already been announced include Saint Etienne, Crystal Fighters and Magnetic Man. And then at 10PM you can meet some great DJs, like Steve Aoki, Axwell, Adam Beyer, The Advent vs Industrialyzer live, Flux Pavilion and Borgore.

Renewed multi-art venue: Culture Zone

Sziget’s emblematic feature under a new name and in a new venue, hosting theater, fine arts, exhibitions, design, classical music, jazz, literature, slam poetry, stand-up comedy, circus, street theatre, artistes, acrobats, jugglers, environmental thinking, recycling, workshops, flashmobs, yoga, tai chi and so much more. Show your face! is the motto of this year’s multi-art activities.

Venues included in the Culture Zone:

Eastern-European Funfair, Museum Circle, Reader’s Park, Tarot Labyrinth, Octopoly – Upcycling Installation, Creative Workshop Zone, Medence RE+Concept Bag workshop, +Stencilworkshop, Medence Concept Store, Hello Wood, Agora

Shame the metal stage isn't going to be there. I really liked that as an addition last year and it made the acts a lot more accessible. Apart from day zero of course so it might be worth us popping over to see what shenanigans we can get up to..!!

Does this mean that we can expect a big headliner plus undercard for the metal stage on day 0? Or will it be more like the reggae day from the other year - with headliners of about the level of UB40?

I see that Lacuna Coil are supporting Marilyn Manson in London - oh please no! Please let him NOT be the headliner! :negative:

His tour schedule says he'll be in Canada on the Saturday and Sunday. Although that does not rule out an appearance of him on Tuesday, it does make it a little less likely.
