Sziget 2012

I'd kill for Pearl Jam. They are one of only a few bands that I'd love to see live that I'd not been able to yet.

I think the Cure might be a good shout too as they are doing the Euro festival circuit.

Also regarding tickets, I'm with Vinny. I've always gone through the UK site and you pay via Paylogic and the PDF tickets are instantly downloadable...sorted

I have managed to find a return flight for £148- not bought it yet though :s

If I had to pick one band to be playing Placebo would have definitely been in my top three so I was really excited at the last announcement. If the headliners seem a little disappointing to the likes of us- they aren't marketing to an exclusively British audience and its certainly the case that there are bands that have had their day and are long forgotten in the UK still making mega bucks in a nearby country! It works the other way around too- for example I really enjoyed watching the Manics last year incredibly close to the front with plenty of space to myself as the crowd was amazingly small (to me) considering who it was. At a British festival it would have been a considerably more cramped experience if they were playing on a similarly sized stage!!

New Order, The Cure, Pearl Jam, Elbow and Franz Ferdinand are currently accepting festival slots - any of those could headline Sziget. Biffy have never played so could be a good shout. There's usually at least one dance act headlning the main stage as well. Who are currently big enough - Deadmau5, Chase & Status perhaps?

Daft Punk would be huge. But I doubt they will be touring in Europe at that time... My guess, Fatboy Slim. Or maybe Pendulum could make the step to a headline spot if no other electronic acts are available.

I'm quite sure they won't book The Prodigy after they headlined last year. Although many Western-Europeans thought they were one of the best headliners for Sziget, many Hungarians didn't like them being booked. Reason for that seemed to be that The Prodigy has visited Hungary many times before and Hungarians were hoping to see something they didn't see before.

The lineup so far sucks, compared to other festivals (Rock Werchter, Roskilde, Hurricane, etc.)

Hope they will announce some big acts soon! Need to convince some of my friends to go :D

But dont you guys think they lineup in the end will be awesome ? - they were voted best Major european festival last year, its their 20. festival this year, so they must get a good lineup, right ?

Sziget is always slow with the line-up, but this year they're surprisingly early with their first names. Usually they announce their first names end of February or even in March like last year. Also they usually don't announce all big acts at once. Last year Day 0 (tuesday) headliner Prince was announced only a couple of weeks before the festival.

Also, if big headliners are the only thing you're looking for in a festival, there will be many festivals suiting your desire better than Sziget. Sziget always has a very eclectic line-up with about 1,000 acts (of which about 250 international acts), but the headliners are usually disappointing if you compare them with the classic line-up festivals (those that invest all their money in big headliners). But to make up for that, Sziget has much more entertainment to offer and a much better athmosphere!

I recommend if anyone has Lufthansa flying out of their local airport to look into them. I thought we were going to have to truck it down to Edinburgh to go Jet2 again this year... but an idle check of Skyscanner showed we could go out of our local airport (Aberdeen) with them for less than Jet2 are currently asking for! Only thing is we've got a stopover in Frankfurt but I hear it's nice as airports go anyway and it isn't a long one so won't be so bad :)

Do they already have any tour dates in Europe in August or late July? If so, I'd consider them as an option.

Some other acts that are (probably) around at the time of Sziget include a.o.: Foo Fighters, Iggy & The Stooges, The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Two Door Cinema Club, Alice Cooper, Paradise Lost, Florence & The Machine, Björk (although it's unlikely she'll come to Sziget after she has been confirmed for Balaton Sound already), Bon Iver, The Wombats, Feist, Limp Bizkit, Refused, Infected Mushroom, Enter Shikari, Atari Teenage Riot, Machinehead, Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Beatsteaks, Royal Republic, Social Distortion, Ministry, Anvil, Cradle of Filth, Napalm Death, Amon Amarth, Hammerfall, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Juno Reactor. (Source: a German forum)

In my opinion too much hardrock/metal bands in this list of acts, it doesn't really reflect the diversity of Sziget. But, except for some metal festivals, not that many August festivals announced acts yet...

There's less bands on the Main Stage, five per day, but on other stages are often more bands a day. Usually the first two bands of the day perform 60 minutes, the next two bands perform 75 minutes and the headliner performs 90 minutes. But sometimes there are exceptions, for example Prince performed for three hours last year and the year before that Iron Maiden performed for two hours.

I understand why many people compare EXIT and Sziget, they both usually have good weather, they're relative cheap and they're close to each other, but I think they are two totally different festivals. EXIT is about line-up (with many dance acts) and the beautiful festival site, while Sziget is about atmosphere, freedom and location. EXIT may often have a more appealing line-up than Sziget and the festival site is beautiful, dancing in an 18th century fortress with sunset is an incredible experience (you should certainly go there at least once), but for the rest it's a lot like the British festivals. Only one entry to the festival site a day, a separate camping site, coins for buying drinks, very strict controls at the entrance by both festival guards and Serbian police, many guards watching you at the festival... while Sziget is freedom! You can enter and leave the festival site as many times as you want, you can camp almost everywhere on the festival site, the guards are usually friendly, and you don't see that many of them (although in case they're needed, they often show up with many). This freedom and the very eclectic line-up create a unique atmosphere where metal heads go hand in hand with ravers and hippies. It's an atmosphere that attracts many people regardless of what bands are playing. And another big pro for Sziget is that it is in Budapest, which makes your festival holiday a great city trip too.
