The Dirty Independence Question

I'm frankly astonished to hear you say that.

I wouldn't presume to doubt you. But unless you have travelled for a football match where different rules apply, I really am surprised...& disappointed.

There are few things on this world I despise more than blind prejudice...(is there any other sort?)

Incidentally, I commend you for not bringing this up on this thread beforew. If you experience it again I will be by your side..admittedly this will not help you muuch as, despite being from Glasgow, my fighting abilities are on a par with Mike Tyson's fridge.

I'm sure there's lots of lovely people in Scotland and places where such things don't happen .... but that's been only one of of my trips north of the border, while the some of the other (I think) 5 had me ducking punches. ;)

Are you saying that you were involved in fights on 5 different occasions in Scotland, just because of your accent?

well, by all accounts I doubt I was anywhere vastly different - T in the Park (the last time was around 10 years ago now).

My only other trip to Scotland outside of T was for Connect - which was a much more pleasant experience. :)

(Tho, to be fair, it was only that one or two each time at T - I'm not trying to imply every Scot is like that. Just unfortunately, it was also every time (except perhaps one, I forget now) I've encountered some unpleasant anti-English sentiment at some level at T [not all as bad as each other, of course])

As you say all countries have nutters - but unfortunately for people like me too many of the nutters round your way have had their nuts screwed by Alex.

Incidentally, I commend you for not bringing this up on this thread beforew.

Part of that is because I have brought it up on these forums before, and too few wanted to accept that this sort of thing does go on.

Anyway, enough of that. The existence of these people is nothing to do with my opinions towards the indyref, outside of the general recognition that the standard sort of nationalism that Alex does ("it's all the fault of those nasty outsiders") is always going to create a number of them.

If you experience it again I will be by your side..admittedly this will not help you muuch as, despite being from Glasgow, my fighting abilities are on a par with Mike Tyson's fridge.

 - and I thank you for the sentiment, and the fact that I've not had to battle you for you to accept it happened. :)

I'm very happy to move on. As I've said, the existence of these people isn't anything worth debating here.

Nope.

A long time ago now (10+ years), and the details are hazy and rather mixed together, so please forgive me for my vagueness.

I had to duck a punch at least once; I had people abuse me only on having heard my english accent; And ...

One occasion turned a bit sour as a result of what was essentially a misunderstanding where matey got a bit pissed off - but his default from that was that I was an english c**t trying to take the piss out of him.

It was also all at T in the Park, and I'm well-aware that's not a representative cross section of the Scottish public. :)

Ever thought it might be your personality Neil :)

One of them was, (the 'misunderstanding' above), but not in the way you're thinking. :P

I'm absolutely shit at understanding strong accents from anywhere in the world, and me having to politely keep asking a guy to repeat himself had him thinking I was taking the piss.

It wouldn't have helped with either his speaking or reaction that he was absolutely bladdered too.

As all the others were too, I think I'm safe in presuming. Scots know how to do pissed properly. :P

It's not mine either, tho it's very good at doing what it aims to do.

Connect was much nicer. :)

Agreed and agreed. It`s a roaster fest at T, some terrible scenes and sorry to hear about your experience. Heading up on the Sunday only this year as too old to put up with the nonsense for a whole weekend but it does what it does as you say. It was a pity that Connect didn`t last. Cracking venue and a much better crowd. Saw Mani doing a dj set out of a caravan about 3am on the Sunday of ( i think ) it`s 2nd and final year. Pity.

Anywayz way off topic.

Hope you can all try your hardest to enjoy some of the World Cup. I know it won`t be easy as there is no Team UK for you all to get behind. Difficult as it may be, why not try and give some support to your own country *

* This is a ( poor ) attempt at a joke and I realise that if there were a Team UK we ( Scotland ) would be unlikely to contribute many players :)

I think "many" is a massive exaggeration. I was having a discussion the other day about - who was the last Scottish footballer who could be described as world class.

Never mind , I still have my Argentina 1978 mug - a rarity, as most were destroyed when thrown at tv screens.

There is a school of thought that blames the 1979 referendum result on Scotland's abject failure in 1978.

Typically, we did still manage to score one of the best ever world cup goals against one of the best ever world cup teams

So ... what's all this business of Salmond's spad sending those emails?

Storm in a teacup, something sackable, or Scottish politics showing that it's nothing different to Westminster?

Considering that Westminster politicians don't get the sack for things they should be jailed for....

Hang on, hang on .... Holyrood is meant to be different, remember?

It stops being different as soon as you (essentially) say "if they can do it so can we", as you just have.

But anyway, what I'm seeing here that's possibly wrong is not so much him sending that email, but the fact the taxpayer is paying for dedicated staff for the yes campaign.

That surely shouldn't be happening?

Agree with all that.

I think the World of politics throughout the UK would be better without special advisors.

However Campbell Gunn's biggest fault was to let BT off the hook by not checking his facts when he sent 1 e mail to a Telegraph journalist.

The e mail did not "smear" Claire Lally unless misidentifying someone's father in law is a smear. If it is it must surely be up there with the most pathetic smears in political history.

There were two "facts" in the e mail. the other was that Ms Lally is a Labour activist & member of the Scottish Labour party national executive. It would appear that this fact is correct.

This does not in any way detract from her qualities as a mother & carer for her children. Nor does it mean that she is not entitled to express her views.

It does however mean that when she is presented by the no thanks campaign simply as an "ordinary mother" this is at best a bit iffy & at worst downright dishonest.

The phrase ordinary mother is clearly shorthand for "not one of these lying scumbag politicians"

Most of the limited on line stuff I have read has attacked Better Together not Claire Lally.

Anyone who personally attacks Claire Lally is a sad & pathetic apology for a human being.
