The queues on the ferries to Portsmouth are better, but still not brilliant. Overall I doubt it'll make a difference. The main thing is making sure you leave early enough.

We're going to book flights tomorrow night, we'll book onto the same one as you on the way there but will be coming back on the monday. I'm feeling a lot more calm about it now!

My ferry tickets are booked for £50 using a surplus of Tesco clubcard vouchers. Need to book accomodation now for Wednesday and that'll be me sorted. Worse comes to worse like it did last year with the weather, I'll get a room on Monday on the day.

Is driving worth it?

Driving is SO worth it. Mainly because you don't have to face the Hill of Doom if you're going in and out from the car park, but also (obviously) because you can take more stuff. I'm in Brighton, and giving 2 people a lift and splitting the ferry & car parking costs works out around the same price as the hellish train - bus - hovercraft - bus - Hill of Doom combo.

Your mileage may (literally) vary.

I'd say a lot more than £60 in fuel unless you are meaning for 1 way? More like about £70 each way.

Plus far better/quicker going down M6 > M40 > A34 right to Southampton, I'd allow about 8 hours inc minimal stops.

I'm still going to get the train from Kingston to Portsmouth, fast cat then the bus there. No point in me driving. Cost of ferry is included in train ticket price if you buy a ticket (even at a machine) to Ryde Pier. Cost less than £40 return last year.

We just went for the standard baggage allowance, will be travelling as light as possible and we'll just buy booze and food once we get to the isle of wight. Will the standard be enough? I think it's 20kg per person, if the bags are too heavy I'll just need to wear all of my clothes.

Do you need to book into the Waverly campsite in advance or do you just turn up? How much does it cost?
