I agree, Manson at Reading 2005 was one of the best gigs I've ever seen.

Maybe I just spoke to the wrong people, I'll go find the videos. I definitely saw Futureheads/Bloc Party that evening so I'm starting to wonder how much of the actual set I actually saw although Iron Maiden were on for 2 hours (Incubus were definitely rubbish before MM).

The thing with Manson in 2005 was that everyone who was into him before the Columbine massacre watched that set and thought how dull and watered down he'd become with a set that was 'safe' and dispised it where as anyone who hadn't seen him before or were indie fans watched and thought how 'different' and 'innovative' the set and appearance was.

Sorry to sound like a music snob as I dispise people who are but that is my view which is shared by countless others I've met who were over the age of 20 at the time of that performance.

Also,I would not say that that was the time of Manson's peak musically but commercially in the UK you could say it probably was although it would still be close I think between that and 'Mechanical Animals' era.

I'm guessing you are talking bout 05 as that was the last time he played... as far as I can tell that gig was pretty much universally praised.. a few of my mates have said it was one of the best gigs they've ever been to and surely that was in his prime? In fact he seems to have played Reading on all his most succesful and praised tours (i.e. 1997, 2001 and 2005). The vids I've seen from all three gigs look insanely good.

Arcade Fire in NME was awesome too. Didn't know many of their songs at the time but I can really vividly remember them opening with "wake up" and loving every second.

Manson could be the 3rd headliner. And yeah, Arcade Fire were fucking amazing. As were Cooper Temple Clause.

I'm not sure being less extreme warrents the set being bad though? A good show is a good show! I was over the age of 20 at the time, not a purely Indie boy and I thought it twas awesome : )

As much as I am a huge fan of Manson I can not seeing him headline but you never know.

He was supposedly terrible at Download in '09, I saw him at Brixton Academy in December '09 and he was fantastic although he's reportedly been getting booed off at Soundwave Festival. Oh and the new "comeback single" sounds like a bad Stabbing Westward b-side.
