beatkeeper
I am a University of Glamorgan student, currently researching and writing my dissertation which looks at UK music festivals. I would be very grateful if you could answer a few questions concerning music festivals to help me in my research: Age (optional): The festival market has become saturated, why do you think music festivals have become so popular? Do you have a certain festival you are aligned to, and return to regularly? What do you look for when choosing a festival to go to? Do you prefer the bigger names or discovering new music at festivals? Throughout the year how many live gigs do you think you go to? People say the success of some festivals isn’t just down to the music, what else do you think in necessary in success of some festivals? Thanks in advance and I hope to see some of you around this summer!
BTK1609
I am a University of Glamorgan student, currently researching and writing my dissertation which looks at UK music festivals. I would be very grateful if you could answer a few questions concerning music festivals to help me in my research: Age (optional): 28 The festival market has become saturated, why do you think music festivals have become so popular? I don't think this can be put down to one factor, rather a combination of things. It is seen as a right of passage for a lot of 16 and 18 year olds leaving school, first weekend away from the parents to go and get wasted etc. They are also quite a cost efficient way of getting to see big acts when the price of a single gig is over £70 on average. Do you have a certain festival you are aligned to, and return to regularly? No. I have not been to a proper festival for over a decade but am going to 2 this year. Reading was my first though and will always be special because of that. It also suits my musical taste the best. What do you look for when choosing a festival to go to? The music is obviously the most important. Atmosphere is important too. Do you prefer the bigger names or discovering new music at festivals? I buy my ticket based on the big names but the chance to discover new music is an important part of the experience. Throughout the year how many live gigs do you think you go to? 3 or 4 on average. People say the success of some festivals isn’t just down to the music, what else do you think in necessary in success of some festivals? Again atmosphere, price, what other entertainment is there. Thanks in advance and I hope to see some of you around this summer!
xxtinkerbellxx
Age (optional): 21 The festival market has become saturated, why do you think music festivals have become so popular? As poster above said they seem to be very popular with school leavers now just going for a p*** up after exams. Also celebrities have made it 'fashionable' to go to festivals. Do you have a certain festival you are aligned to, and return to regularly? Used to be V festival until it turned into a chav fest. Now its Strawberry Fields Festival, Y Not Festival & Glastonbury when its on/when I can afford it. What do you look for when choosing a festival to go to? Music, Atmosphere, Decent price, Length of festival, Location, Other things to do other than the music Do you prefer the bigger names or discovering new music at festivals? Discovering new music Throughout the year how many live gigs do you think you go to? None because I normally fill up my Summer with festivals instead. People say the success of some festivals isn’t just down to the music, what else do you think in necessary in success of some festivals? Price, Atmosphere, Location, If they offer camping/facilities for kids,

kaosmark2
BTK... Price of a single gig is over £70 on average? What? I rarely pay more than £25 unless it's for a huge act, and even then it's usually 40-50 quid. Where have you got that idea? I am a University of Glamorgan student, currently researching and writing my dissertation which looks at UK music festivals. I would be very grateful if you could answer a few questions concerning music festivals to help me in my research: Age (optional): 23 The festival market has become saturated, why do you think music festivals have become so popular? Increasingly popular with school leavers combined with older people continuing to go. Acts on Radio 1/in the charts nowadays being bands rather than club music. Cost-efficient if you like a lot of the bands. Reunion gigs being done at festivals. Do you have a certain festival you are aligned to, and return to regularly? Not really. I've been to Reading several times, am returning to Bestival after going last year, ATP's indoor festivals several times and Sonisphere twice, but there's no festival I would absolutely be sure of going to every year. What do you look for when choosing a festival to go to? Lineup, lineup, atmosphere, lineup, interested friends, lineup, random other stuff that goes on, lineup, travel ease, lineup, what I can do around the area for a couple of days either side, lineup, dates I'm free on, lineup. Do you prefer the bigger names or discovering new music at festivals? I've never been to a festival where I haven't liked at least one headliner, but it's the bands further down that make a festival really enjoyable, and a different experience from just an outdoor gig. I like to see a number of bands I already like lower down the lineup, and then work to discover a few other bands that are on that I'm not particularly familiar with. Throughout the year how many live gigs do you think you go to? In 2008-2010 I went to ~ 30 each year, but last year I only went to half that. This year will probably be around 15-20. People say the success of some festivals isn’t just down to the music, what else do you think in necessary in success of some festivals? The lineup is what draws people to festivals, but I think people only go back if they've got the rest of it right. A good campsite, late night entertainment, random other stuff happening during the day, decent food stalls, decent toilets and sensible travel arrangements. A good shuttle-bus service makes a huge difference. Thanks in advance and I hope to see some of you around this summer!
BTK1609
I've got that idea by the last few gigs I've been to/brought tickets for. Probably should have been a bit clearer and said price of massive gigs is that much once booking fees and postage are included.

BTK1609
Bloody hell. Think I've only once paid that sort of price. Maybe twice. Hardly ever go over the £50 barrier.
kaosmark2
To be honest I only do a couple of big gigs a year so I can justify it. I would love to do 20-30 and explore new bands but I've got a young family so it's a case of time constraints. This is why I'm looking forward to going to Leeds and Isle of Wight this year because I will see loads of bands I wouldn't normally get a chance to.
