Lineup 2014

It's just dawned on me that 2000 was the last time the festival had 3 British headliners. Does anyone think that we could see that again in the near future?

Not for awhile, the problem isn't getting just 3 big British acts all touring the same summer it's getting enough big British acts that are of a different enough nature and I don't see where they'd come from.

Or Blur, Mumford, Maiden? I think there are combinations that would work but it would all depend on touring schedules I guess. And the last time it did happen was Oasis, Pulp and Stereophonics, who aren't vastly different from one another. I don't think it's too important really, just thought it was kind of interesting how much the festival relies on non British (mainly American) bands when it comes to headliners.

Unfortunately newish big British headliners are lacking these days, and it'll only be possible soon due to all these reformations, ie blur, stone roses, sabbath.

What I think Britain needs is a new massive general rock band to emerge, ie, a British foo fighters. With the music industry changing it'll be hard to look at album sales to see whether new bands are popular enough to get to headline status, which is why I think just putting out singles has become so popular - but it'll be interesting to see for sure.

Also, just it out interest,

Indie headliners - arctics, stone roses, blur, kasabian, Mumford and sons

Rock - muse, biffy clyro

Metal - black sabbath, iron maiden

Can anyone think of other British headliners for the reading market other then those who are still around?

If it were to happen it would have to include a new headliner, probably out of Depeche Mode, The Libertines, Mumfords, Florence, The Vaccines or Foals.

I think it's feasible, just unlikely with what we have at the moment.but out of those

depeche mode - maybe, but a risky booking. Depends on if Melvin thought the cure was a success I imagine

Libertines - please die. But if the got back, yes

Mumfords - can see them playing next year with Metallica.

Florence - urgh. This fest is getting awful....yep....

The vaccines - who likes this band!? Please stop listening to them. But yes.

Foals - 1 more successful album, and a sure bet. Melvin clearly has a boner for them, and I have to say, their variety is impressing me. More of the hummer type stuff mixed with the new albums sound and they're onto a winner

Maybe Foals can shut down 75% of the festivals in the country so that they aren't squabbling over headliners or introducing exclusives to protect their investments and the pool of availbale headliners for each one is bigger.

To be honest, I think they have a point. Obviously, I'd love to see Blur, Oasis, Pulp, The Stone Roses etc. but I can't help but think that it would be better for the whole music industry (especially in this country) if festivals focused on pushing new bands up the bill.

That said, I think FR have been good at doing that recently.

The combinations are entirely possible for all British headliners, it's just unusual that a better american option wouldn't present itself. Nobody's going to book someone based on their nationality, if they can sell tickets that's all that matters.

If anyone's interested, Glastonbury does it more.

2004: Oasis, Macca, Muse

2002: Rod Stewart, Coldplay, Stereophonics

2000: Travis, Bowie, Chemical Brothers

1998: Blur, Pulp, Primal Scream

1997: Prodigy, Radiohead, Ash

Etc. etc. I think it's just that america is better for rock acts in the ilk of Foo Fighters, Green Day etc. that RnL needs to book, given what most of its audience want

Biffy Clyro?

Yeah to a degree, but they have been around for ages and pretty much everyt fest has had them numourous times. I mean something new, to excite the industry again. Although I'd add that biffy clyro are more experimental then the foos, and even though I think that's a great thing, I know alot of foos fans that hate biffy

Is it the fests jobs to make new acts big tho? I'm all for new headliners but if you try to push acts that aren't ready/able to pull it off then it's a wasted slot imo.

You know what, it's a funny one. It shouldn't be, but has kind of turned out that way. New band comes along, release singles, hopefully get noticed either by gigging or luck, maybe get airplay on the radio. (Although even Radio 1 doesn't really do rock bands anymore, maybe XFM). Then they start getting festival slots.

Obviously it's the bands job to create stuff people like to get more notice and airplay, but that in effect means going higher up the bill at fests. I'd say generally, with festival goers, the higher bands are the more people are likely to check them out either on YouTube or spotify etc. This gives the audience a chance to really listen to the music rather then on the radio where they may be busy doing other things, which helps them get more fans.

So overall, I'd say its pretty important for exposure, yeah. How many of us have now tried (and probably hated) the lumineers after the announcement as opposed to before hand?

Nope, but I think they're becoming increasingly more influential in it now that most of the money is in live performances
