Lineup 2014

Alot of people were expecting Biffy to headline this year around this time last year but then they were announced for Download & IOW as subs so people were expecting them to take a year off from the fests and then come back to headline R&L and/or TITP.

Fair enough, but I certainly didn't. It seemed pretty obvious that once biffys new mammoth album came out (and with the release date of early 2013) that they would headline reading. Download just got a great booking and literally booked them to sub for the last time any fest really could, and I think Andy copping realises that

But where else were they going to play? They weren't going to sub R&L a year before headlining, there was no Glasto and they aren't a V band. So they subbed the only other two festivals left, Download and IOW. I don't think he should get credit for that.

No, but I think it was more lucky timing for copping, getting biffy at the end of their preheadline era. Soni was a smaller fest granted when they headlined but they proved that they are capable headliners. Copping went of this, acknowledged download was bigger so they weren't ready to headline, and gave them a sub, just a few months before opposites started getting rave reviews

I think they're a good band, and I'm a fan, but opposites hasn't exactly got "rave reviews" and I'd say they're quite popular critically and quite popular in terms of mainstream, but very popular with the reading crowd thats why they're headlining, I doubt they'd ever headline glasto or v, probably not even IOW , the only other festivals I could see them headlining are T in the Park, maybe download, unless if their next album is either acclaimed by the mainstream or by critics...

I disagree. I could see them headlining glasto, t, download and iow easily. And I haven't seen a single bad review for it yet. Maybe another album to take them to glasto headline, but even then I don't think it would be needed. They are one of the biggest rock bands from the uk currently, along with muse, radio head, and all the indie stuff. Glasto like uk headliners too, so why the hell not.

yeah the albums liked, 69 on metacrictic and i think thats a pretty reliable source, but its not exactly rave, still if mumford can headline glasto, biffy probably can with one more solid album

Personally, I think QOTSA could easily headline next year. Last album was released in 2007 and there has been demand for them since, we are 6 years on from that last release. With 2 strong headliners beside them and a strong sub below them they could easily do it.

It really does all depend on this new album. They're certainly not at that level yet, but yeah, if it produces 2/3 radio friendly singles, and were with 2 other strong headliners, maybe, but it doubt all that will happen. They did last play 10 though, so I don't think their last release has much to do with it.

Something I've thought of though is that - and I don't know if this "rule" still applies, but reading like to have at least 1 UK headliner. Biffy fit that this year as the underdog, but Qotsa would be American. Obviously if we had a band like blur or arctics alongside them, then it would be valid, but you'd need a big British headliner to be alongside them.

I'd rather Queens Of The Stone Age headlined than one of the huge dull headliners that are bound to come back every 5 or so years a la KOL, provided the album's a success give them a chance. Reading have booked worse headliners, just look at The Darkness & Razorlight. QOTSA are definitely very popular within the core demographic of R/L, and I think that given they're headlining Beni alongside Arctic Monkeys and The Killers, a bump up wouldn't be met with shock horror.

Completely agree. I would love them to headline, but I think reading would still try to get them to sub if the new album isn't all that

But aren't they already working on its follow up. I'm sure I read that online the other day.

Yeah, Billy's started writing a couple of songs, but they'll be off on tour until August soon. By the time that's over, they'll start demoing and stuff. I don't think they'll start recording it until about Spring 2014, with the album out in late Winter or early 2015. They'd hit the US with a tour first, I'm thinking either 2015 or 2016 that they'd be over here.

They take a long time to do their albums, Oceania was about 9 months late!

Of course I'm only speculating, they could have it done by then end of the year who knows.
