Lineup 2014

it's ironic after the whole blur thing

yes but it's not a great use of it. Paramore have not been touring with Hyde Park, Glasto, T and Hyde Park again plus America, plus Europe with new material. It's still living on the old stuff.

Paramore have a new album out and have a time to tour it now, not 2 years and 4 months after.

There is a world of difference in the two.

Don't think anyone does need to step up.....as already said, both this year and last years headliners had already headlined at least 1 uk fest. Although if you consider Mumford and sons a step up then hell, go for them.

Elbow? Blur? QOTSA?

I mean step up at R+L, although it would have been better worded as 'new headliner', but most acts that R+L would have as headliner have previously played. There's generally a new headliner every year; Melvin prides himself on it.

Mumfords would be a step up in this case but I don't think they would/could book Arctics and Mumfords.

What are the bands that could be seen as realistic and big enough to do it?

My own opinion would take QOTSA, Elbow and The Prodigy out of this. I say Prodigy as on the realistic side, it's very doubtful.

The Prodigy isn't a new headliner. They are a step up I suppose, only becuase they stepped down.

There's a few names that could be considered for a step up to headline status but all of them are debatable on whether they're big enough;

Paramore, QOTSA, Florence, Black Keys, 30STM are the only options I can see currently to be new headliners next year.

And seeing as we're talking about Elbow; Coldplay would be new headliners too.

Mumford are in with a shout too and I wouldn't rule out acts like Jay Z if the new hippity hoppity vibe at the fest works out.

Come to think of it, only one year out of the last six (2010) has had genuine step-up headliners, the rest have had headliners new to headlining at Reading but given their bump by other festivals.

Can only really think of Mumfords that fit that for 2014. Oh dear...

I agree, I think they may announced a Gentlemen Of The Road show for somewhere end of this year/early next year if they have space that's nowhere bear R&L, but others will be after them. It's exactly the criteria R&L like though.

good, so we are agreed it doesn't have to be a band like paramore, QOTSA, or Black Keys - ones in which the headline status may cause abit of debate as to whether they are current / popular / big enough.

A new headliner is definitely one of few "patterns" that even we cant argue with thewayiam for seeing. But they are usually headlining of the back of successfully headlining another major UK fest.

This is why I think Mumford are in for much more of a shout then QOTSA and the like. Its not so much taking a risk, but still "new".

Also, I can definitely see Mumford and Arctics both getting booked. Why not? One is a new to emerge massive folk band who have played other fests in 2013, and the other is a commercial and alternative rock band who would be a lucky exclusive of the back of a new album. People have been winging at not enough indie this year, like 2008s headliners, but then came 2009. What goes around, comes around

It only really has to be someone relevant that will sell tickets and (usually), but not always has new material to promote. They usually do yes, as a rule though, all the other festivals they can play before R&L are not as big, V Fest is but we don't always take a header from them and Glasto is a different game completely.

On a side note note, just listened to Paramore's new album and have to see while there are some okay tracks in there, I don't see them headlining at all off of it. I'm not even sure it's R&L relevant but time will tell.

I agree, I think something like Arctic Monkeys / Mumford and Sons / Metallica, subbed by Queens of the Stone Age / The Vaccines / The Prodigy is feasible?

It was only the other day I was touting QotSA to headline, but I've reconsidered ;)

There will be some serious competition for arctic monkeys as they could easily headline v, titp and iow. I dont even expect reading to be favorites to get them either. Would be better for them to do iow and titp rather than just reading.

All the competition for arctics is good for there bank balance anyway.
