2013/ the future of soni?

But, before the recent-ish upturn in the popularity of rock, I had my doubts as to whether Download has a longterm future as a 3-day fest - and those doubts remain because right now its riding a wave. I definitely don't believe there's a longterm future for 2 big rock fests in the UK, and which of the two do you think might be the first to fall?

Whilst I agree in theory, I think there's plenty of bands in the pool, Sonisphere has already started the trend of bumping up younger talent in order to increase the headliners pool for future years. I think Download and Reading will do the same next year.

trend. they chucked mr clyro on once they were stuck for headliners who went straight back to nion headlining or r you stupid and count every band to haeadlining soni as a new headliner?

If you asked me in 2008 whether Download would fall soon, I would have said most definitely. Now, I think we will lose some festivals in the next couple of years, but I don't think it will be Download or Sonisphere. I think festivals which take place at Hyde Park/ Victoria Park are at biggest risk such as Hard Rock Calling and High Voltage.

As to your other point about comparing Europe's largest touring festival with a festival which didn't work first time around and another which is already dead in the water. Sonisphere can't be compared to Phoenix/ Hop Farm, as they are at completely different stages and in different league's.

If they are going to pull 2013 off. LP and Maiden would be two great booking. Even if it mean't going back to two days. It'd be much better to take a step back, get more talent in than lose it altogether. A band like Shikari would be perfect too on LP day, don't play Download, played R&L multiple times but could see it not happening next year.

A band like You Me At 6 would be good too, just sold out wembley arena this morning in 2hrs. Billy Talent would be a good option to get back too,

Also add AC/DC too seeing as they're touring/doing festivals next year (or said they'd like too). RATM, Aerosmith (who are doing festivals next year though I reckon HRC). System of a Down haven't played either and would be popular enough despite no reunion hype, Black Sabbath, Tool. There's a fair amount of choices, and quite a few look like they're possibly touring next year too.

Edit: RHCP too I guess seeing as they're doing Soundwave, might hit some euro festivals this summer after missing most to do their own shows, and we all thought they were a shoe in for soni 2012 before announcing their own dates with Kili 2 weeks before :P

Aye I think Guns is too risky a booking, considering their arena tour didn't sell to well did it (I know it was pretty easy to get free tickets to pretty much every date)? And it's not like they've hardly been in the UK over the past few years. I agree someone like Linkin Park making a return is probable and would be a solid booking alongside another solid headliner. I'm not sure they'd do a 2 repeat combo like Maiden and Linkin Park, but to be honest if that's what is available, they probably would, repeats or not, both of those bands sell, and together with a smaller headliner on the friday night, someone like A7X even being bumped up to headline the Friday (if it's 3 days) I think would probably sell pretty well. I certainly don't think it'd lead to another cancellation.

Like I said though, there's a fair few strong headliners around that wouldn't be a repeat, and most seem to be touring next year to boot, so I think they're in a decent position, as long as they aren't all poached by other festivals/promoters (to do their own shows)

Well I think that depends on their rep damage with bands themselves. I think if they have 3 decent names behind the festival, particularly a big one like Maiden, most bands would be happy enough that it'll be going ahead. And obviously considering who puts the festival on, when you've got Stuart Galbraith and John Jackson, who have both worked with pretty much every name in rock and the latter being the booking agent for a lot of the bigger acts, I think they'll be able to be quite convincing. Though that remains to be seen! As I said, it's looking a bit better already in terms of headline acts looking likely to do festivals next year, so I think they'll be in a decent position to make a return.

Those headliners would certainly sell well I reckon, I do think it'll be a case of them having 2 solid headliners and a 3rd being someone bumped up, seemed to work for them in 2010 and 2011.

Seems to work for most fests. To be honest. T has their blip year this year, R&L did last year. Soni I think just had Download and bands not available at the wrong time for them. Glasto did affect fests in certain ways though, no doubt about it. Bands want to play it while cashing in at other fests.
