I think all the rumours were for Sonisphere France - the only Sonisphere Maiden haven't played afaik - which could still be the case? Though I do agree, it puts them in a somewhat tough position, as there's few bands as big as them about!

They definitely won't go for metallica next year, 3 out of 4 festivals would just be far too much. Only other big rock bands that are supposedly doing festivals next year is AC/DC, think I heard something about The Who as well, but both of those are naturally very unlikely.

Seriously doubt we'd see Kiss or FNM. FNM aren't going to do anything new, but have said they're just going to do the odd tours/shows here and there every few years. Next year Mike is touring Tomahawk who have their new album out anyways. As for Kiss, with all the mucking about with them this year - they booked a lot of festivals (inc sonisphere going by rumours) away back last october, then decided they weren't touring this summer anymore, obviously they finally decided to come over to the UK anyways after months of saying no but that delay was part of the issue with the festival this year. Their rescheduled date had no soni pre-sale and was done by Livenation as well.

If I was running Soni now, Id book younger acts to appeal to a young audience and try and change the dynamic of the festival. Download has Iron Maiden, why not go completely the opposite way and go for 16-21 year olds mainly.

Book Paramore, Bullet, You Me At Six, Enter Shikari, Asking Alexandra, Black Veil Brides and every other fad Kerrang band you can at a cheaper cost and give them high slots and charge a lower ticket price, that would get Soni up and running again.

Id say Avenged Sevenfold as well but they aren't touring next year.

I said something similar earlier in the thread, that they should be looking at bands like Paramore, QOTSA, Soundgarden, Deftones, 30STM, etc. who would normally sub at the major festivals to headline and pack the rest of the bill with quality rather than filler. I wouldn't go so far as concentrating purely on 16-21 year olds but definitely stay away from the wrinkly rock dinosaurs (I wouldn't put Soundgarden in that bracket just yet!) and have more of a contemporary feel (although it may not actually be that contemporary in reality) that seems to go along with Soni's image as more of a relaxed and progressive rock festival.

I just think they have to do something more like 2011. Clearly they lost the battle with Download (and R&L if you beieve the story that Paramore turned down a headline slot to sub at R&L) this year and had to put on big-name but questionable headliners with a weak undercard and suffered. If they keep going for marquee headliners that have big names but in reality aren't that much of an attraction then they're going to keep falling into the same trap. Biffy and Slipknot proved to be a much better choice that Kiss and Queen, I'm not sure if chasing bands like Iron Maiden will i) bring in many more punters than a more contemporary but smaller headliner and ii) is beneficial for the long-term future of Soni or indicative of the way that they want to take the festival.

Jump is right that they need a mixture, I don't think Paramore, Deftones and QOTSA all headlining in the same year would work but they need to play to their strengths and work in new headliners like those to try and offer something different from Download. I don't believe there are enough acts (especially what may be classed as headline-calibre) to go around and as Download are firmly in the driving seat Soni will need to get creative.

Latest I've heard is that Sonisphere 2013 is still happening - but it's still quite quiet on that front. And rumours round this way too (I live near Knebworth) that Live Nation have booked a slot at the park, similar to what Killi had with RHCP this year.
