Dookie, And Out Come The Wolves, Enima Of The State, Sing The Sorrow, From Here To Infirmary, The Shape Of Punk To Come, In Utero, Mellon Collie, The Fragile, Holy Wood, Rust In Peace, Angel Dust, White Pony, Mutter, Sacrament, Shadows Are Security, Declaration, Relationship Of Command

All came after the bands first two albums, and all are better than those first two IMO

FFDP lyrics are ridiculous but then so are Limp Bizkit's and both are good fun. The 3rd album is nowhere near as good as the other 2 though.

Shadows Fall's The Art Of Balance (3rd album) was the start of the band for me. First 2 were ok but from this album onwards they were a far better band.

I most strongheartedly disagree with that choice. Gish vs Siamese Dream is a tough choice but no other Pumpkins album comes close to those two. Melon Collie doesn't even have more better songs than either of them, let alone the same unrelenting brilliance of the first two.

In more general terms, not disputing that these albums are better, but how many (I accept several have) actually progressed to a new sound and redefined what the bands were doing? Some are major evolutions of sound, but some bands haven't changed their sound at all in their career. AC/DC for instance sound identical through their career.

I did state that it was my own personal opinion, and while i do like Smashing Pumpkins, i wouldn't call myself a purist by any stretch of the imagination, so maybe that has something to do with my choice (i just really like that album).

On your other point, admittedly some of these albums haven't redefined the bands, more that they've honed their skills and just wrote better material. Although some of them have seen a departure from their original sound (AFI being a prime example of a band changing direction after the first few albums)

Fair enough :P it's not a bad album tbf, just not in the same league.

Yeah, I'm just interested by the 'contrived parodies of their own work' bit. Bands not changing their sound seems to be quite common, and while they often improve at what they do, it doesn't necessarily change. I think that's part of the reason later albums are looked down upon, as the shock and excitement value of that band wears off, and they become 'just another band' for people who were around at the time the first 2 albums were released if they don't change/evolve.

its the cynical manipulation angle that always fires me up, the whole "appealing to the kids angst" angle that some bands (in particular 5fdp) turn to to shift units. its fucking horrible.

picture the scene.

tony iommi

"listen to this riff, i think its gonna work"

(plays the opening riff to "black sabbath")

ozzy

"yeah, i could totally sing about how my parents are c**ts and nobody understands me"

all of sabbath

"yeah ozzy, that sounds awesome"

/sabbath

its fucking pathetic, lowest common denominator, lazy lyric writing.

and I hate it.

Hmmm, I suggest the living years by mike and the mechanics and grandma we love you by the st Winifred's choir on a loop on your mp3 player for a while.

Fact is that songs are usually written about emotional times be it love, heartbreak, anger or angst. Some people connect with the music and some with the lyrics. There's plenty of songs out there about conflict with parents and they have been lapped up by each generation they've been presented to. Did Ivan moody shag your bird or something?

Anyone looking for meaning or depth in FFDP music are going to struggle, they're a band who'll unlikely ever play bigger rooms than Academy's but there's definitely a place for them. Did you see the crowd they pulled in 2010? With Disturbed going on hiatus, Stone Sour saying their next record will sound like Pink Floyd !?!? There's a definite gap in the market for the brand of radio friendly, 'Jock-Metal' that FFDP produce. They're a solid live act who have always created a good connection with the crowd, for that mid-afternoon slot they were a safe booking. That said, I'm not overly fussed they've pulled out but they certainly don't annoy me as much as they do T8yman : ) I reserve that level of hatred for anything involving Josh Homme.
