Gingo
the origins of 'gay' being used to denote a bad thing is without doubt homophobic.
Hubert Cumberdale
Its use as a perjorative is homophobic. It was based on homosexuality being a bad thing. Obviously the word had earlier meanings.... Someone wanted to slag off people for staying in hotels and didn't call people a "bunch of pussies". devilman
I have no doubt the use of gay as a derogatory term has its foundations in homophobia, just as homosexuals getting the term gay in the first place was a derogatory term with its foundations based in homophobia. Because I have kids, gay now means crap, soft or rubbish. I tried re-educating them at first but when a whole generation ids using teh term in that way I saw it was a losing battle. So now they know that if someone complains about it, just use another term in front of that person as they probably like the boaby. I realise that efestivals is responsible for the content on here and as such is quite right to warn people about what is and what isn't acceptable. The manner in which he does this is entirely unprofessional and in line with his rude approach on many subjects. This doesn't bother me, I've had a very colourful life, but it does more than smack of double standards. The masterful way he leapt in and told me off has impressed me to the point that I'm a little aroused, I really do hope he is going to the Download meet. I may even have a skirt on that day. As for Nottingham, it used to be the best place to go when I was a 17 year old recruit at Swinderby because of the overwhelming amount of women compared to men. I never found any gay bars then, or rock bars. There were lots of Forest fans about teh place then as they were quite good but I hear there's not many of them around these days. kaosmark2
Wouldn't "a bunch of pussies" be counted, using your rationale, as sexist though? If the fella who originally described the conversation as 'gay', said "whoever stays in a hotel is a massive pussy/girl/woman', would he have been lambasted for being a sexist? I very much doubt it. (mainly as Neil used the word 'pussy' without restraint recently )

kaosmark2
Got explanation of that etymology?
Hubert Cumberdale
I honestly thought you were joking. Ok, so what your suggesting for this is that, as opposed to deriving from genitalia like 90% of insults commonly used, that this insult has derived from a word very uncommonly used and has then been shortened to a word that conveniently happens to be related to a slang word for female genitalia, but its just one big happy coincidence? As opposed to just deriving from the same sexist remarks such as; 'Stop being a girl/woman/fanny/flange/c**t' etc.etc.etc. I REALLY doubt it but I have no proof either way. However i still believe your point is moot as what difference does the words etymology make? If the etymology of the word 'gay' hold no sway over it's contemporary use, then why should pussy? (Just to clarify I don't think using any of these words make you sexist/homophobic, unless intentionally used to be. I'm just giving and example of Neil's hypocrisy)
rivalschools.price
jeezzz!!!! when i saw my thread had two pages i thought 'great! loads of options and possibilities for a piss up in nottingham' hmmm, how wrong i was!! i'll ignore the gay argument, thanks to the people who gave me some suggestions, keep me updated if you hear of anything going on. i wasnt insulted by the way if the original 'gay' comment was aimed at me.after 23 years of festivaling(this will be my tenth donnington) i've done the whole camping thing and have often heard the 'thats not the festival way' comments for the last few years as ive got a hotel(often from people who have been camping at a festival a fraction of the times i have) on the camping front, once there were four of us in a two man tent at the bulldog bash.haha.they used to have a 24 hour bar so we ended up going to bed at different times.pissed down one of the days too,no amount of peer pressure would have stopped me jumping into a hotel that nightif i had the chance, let me tell you.i would have been the 'gayest, pussyest wuss' ever and not cared one bit ha ha. You say I'm unprofessional. You're taking language lessons off young school children and failing to recognise your use of homophobic language. Which one of us is grossly stupid? Recognise your error, apologise, and move on. If you're not able to do that then please fuck off to the homophobes playground.

There is a very big difference between the common use of casual mild sexist language, the discriminatory language of homophobia and all it carries with it, and the general acceptability of both. eFestivals
Anyone who calls their customers or potential customers stupid, swears at them and brings their own company into disrepute is not only unprofessional but probably unhinged. or alternatively, I'm of the belief that people shouldn't be so stupid or offensive to be using homophobic language, and I care far more about that than I do the moron that's using it. Grow up, and take responsibility for your own bad doings. I'm no homophobe. then prove it by stopping using homophobic language. The fact that you're seemingly too stupid to realise it's homophobic language doesn't change it froim being homophobic language.
AcademicPistol
To quote South Park (as all out problems can be solved this way) "let's all get in a pile and get gay with each other" I think that is the most logical thing to do now. Spiky Mike
Probably the best bet for a late rock bar in Nottingham is Ye Olde Salutation Inn any night. If it is the Saturday night, then Rock City, but don't go there on the Friday. Pit and Pendulum is also very good, but they tend to shut about midnight, whereas Salutation opens till about 2.00am.
