Question for concert goers!

I'm currently writing on the experience of live music for my dissertation, and just hoping for a few insights from people passionate about this subject.

My question is: What is it about a live music gig that motivates everyone to spend money on going to them?

I'd appreciate any opinions or thoughts on the subject.

For me I'm only ever really drawn to gigs where I think I know I'm going to be entertained, usually based on whether the acts are known for putitng on a good show. There have been plenty of bands I've liked on record but have heard they're a drag live, and I can't be bothered with it

I'm not sure I fall into your intended catchment group because I don't go to see live bands outside of festivals. That said I do tend to watch some bands when at festivals with friends. For me any exhilaration experienced is from seeing and hearing the musicians and singers applying their skills directly in front of you. When they get it right it's the feeling of being privileged to witness such a wondrous choreographed performance. This is the hairs rising on the back of your neck moment. I think the high of experiencing these moments from time to time gets you through the whole concert leaving you in a more satisfied state than you started off in.

As an aside, when watching Primal Scream live the hairs on my neck don't seem to have any other mode than the standing up mode throughout the whole concert. I just guess other bands do this for other people too during a live performance.

I agree with what a lot of others say in terms of getting to hear the music performed as it was intended.

You get the chance to see different versions of songs from those on record, often with improvisation, and also hear songs that you won't find recorded such as one-off cover versions or guest appearances.

A band with a good frontman/woman can really control a crowd through a variety of techniques such as humour and have them eating out of their hands. Its a good judge on whether the image you have built up of a band lives up to expectations. Some bands can't cut it live.

I don't see why people pay to go to gigs where the performers mime - to me it defeats the whole point.

I have been to the Isle of Wight Festival for the last couple of years - I have a few bands that I want to see live that are playing - but by going to the festival I see so much new stuff... There's a crowd of us that have been over the past few years; and it's become something we know we are going to have a brilliant time doing!

It's about being part of a group and the shared experiences of the music!
