Tell me your best fancy dress stories / plans for 2012?

Hope this isn't breaking any forum rules, but I'm a journalist working for a Party trade magazine (yeah, that's right - dress-up, balloons, that sort of thing) and we're looking at the rise in fancy dress at festivals.

We know it's gone crazy recently, with Bestival and T in the Park endorsing dress-up officially, but we'd love to hear from the people who actually wear the costumes as well.

What have you dressed up as, and why?

Do you do it as a group or on your own? Is it more fun as a gang?

Is it better (easier!) to buy costumes or do you prefer to make your own so they're individual and unique?

What are you planning on going as this year?

We'd love to hear from as many of you as possible - especially if you have any pictures from previous festivals that you wouldn't mind us using!

We'll send a copy of the mag out to everyone who gets involved.

That's wicked!

If I post my email address could you both send me the pics and your full names, ages, hometowns, etc?

jacquip@max-publishing.co.uk

Addresses too, if you want a copy of the mag sent out to you

Come on, there must be loads more pics of facepaint-streaked people dressed up like fools!

This is a totally true story.

Me and my 4 or 5 of my mates had decided back in 2008 that we were going to do a festival of themed fancy dress day at glastonbury.

We were all big Michael Jackson fans, so one of the days we had decided to do was Jacksonbury. We were all going to dress up as michael jackson for the day and on the whole get wasted and be fairly innappropriate. Each of us were different era jackos. There was thriller jacko, Smooth Criminal Jacko (me), Bad Jacko, Disco Jacko, Wacko-Jacko (carrying a naked baby doll around). So we had planned this for 6 months, spent loads on costumes, and carried our Jackson fancy dress to the site. We had a portable sound systems and made up Jackson compilations and had really just gone full out. We had always planned the saturday of glastonbury to be Jacksonbury. This was saturday 26th June 2009, a few hours after the news of Jackson's death had broken.

So imagine us, all psyched for our Jacko extravaganza, finding out the night before that the fucker had just died. We were in shock to say the least. We were umming and erring about whether we should do it, but we thought fuckit. We HAVE to do it.

So there we were a few hours later, all dressed up as michael jackson walking round glastonbury with everyone playing jacko music and talking about it. We were fucking celebrities for the day. It was such an unreal day. We could go 5 meters without people taking pictures and laughing at us.

One of my favourite moments was when this girl (who was really fit) had a massive go at us saying it was really bad taste. So 2 of us spent half an hour talking her round, saying we were massive fans, we'd had it planned for months and that we were doing it in tribute. We had finally buttered her up and got her sweet to the idea, and then wacko jacko comes in wasted on wine with a naked baby doll in his hands and starts doing very innappropriate, but hilarious, roll plays. She was upset to say the least.

It was such an awesome day. This is me reading the morning paper about Jackos death

Of course! And their star sign.

We do this a lot, and people generally like seeing their name/photo in print. I just think it's a nice thank you for sharing their story, but understand if people are reluctant to share too many details.

I've put my email address up - anyone who wants to can see the magazine website here: www xyz co.uk

I think self advertising is a no no on here so not sure if your above post will be allowed to stand. It would be a shame because I'm sure there's quite a few people on here that could help fill your trade rag with photos. I've never done fancy dress at a festival before but am toying with the idea of it for the first time this Bestival. Usually I tend to look on many wearing fancy dress with slight disdain (I don't know why because I generally like to see people being happy and enjoying themselves). There are exceptions though where I think people have made an effort rather than just buy / hire a costume. This effort being humorous, political, absurd, recently in the news etc

Oops - wasn't trying to advertise, just help prove that I'm not out to rob anyone blind!

FWIW I agree though - I love it when people make a real effort and come up with their own creations (even though I've never dressed up at a festival myself). Makes things much more interesting when there's a real sense of creativity around.

If you dressed up at Bestival would you go with the theme?

I think you're right. I had thought about using a cheap new orange cotton sheet that I bought for especially for doing the Hare Krishna bit somewhere in the future. I have done it at a mates fancy dress party many moons ago. The problem there was going to the toilet was an issue with an improvised costume (even for No. 1's). I have now decided, tonight, to buy a costume on line that'll give me a fighting chance of being able to squeeze a cack out should the need arise at Bestival. Bought it off ebay.

Hare Rama and Hare Krishna to one and all.

It was marketed as a Hare Krishna robe. I looked at them a while ago and kept the details of this one (which I may still have or will hunt down for you). The reason I chose this one (and I can only remember one other) was because of the way it drapped - allowing a quick lift up around the lower regions enabling me to maintain my fully toilet trained status. I'll have a look for the one I chose and get back to you.

Incidently I already have the beads, string of flowers, white face paint (for the mark they do above the nose on the forehead). I have my haircut really short anyway. My only reservation is that some people may get offended that I'm insulting a religion. Really don't need head bangers coming up to me picking a religious tolerance kind of fight.

I dress up as Jesus every Glastonbury, in 2009 I was reading through a list of 'Top Festival Moments' when I came across...

'So I was walking down the Other Stage, when the crowd began to part, I look up and see Jesus stood there spread his arms, with sunglasses on and a cocktail in his hand, "2000 years and I still got it!" he yelled, brilliant'

Then I find out my photo was printed in the 2009 Festival Annual, a good year to be the son of the lord

I did it at the festivals I attended, but never like full on costumes and stuff, just pirate really and at bearded theory I did have a glow in the dark beard once.

Not really sure what put me off, but I do remember thinking one time at bearded theory that all that day I hadn't noticed a single person in normal clothes which takes away the novelty value of fancy dress a bit.

I suppose I got bored of pointing out yet another smurf (no offence to fancy dress smurfs!!)
