kaosmark2
Why would they be aiming for second? Spain would still top the group if scores stayed like this
thesecretingredientiscrime
I hate to say it because he's done well over the years, but I'd definitely look towards a replacement for Given if I was Trap.
Ed209
Wrong. For teams level on points it only bears in mind the games between those teams initially. Some weird version of head-to-head. As Italy would have 1-1, 1-1, while Spain and Croatia would have 1-1, 0-0, Italy would top the group.
kaosmark2
In which case the BBC need to change their "as it stands" algorithm because its wrong

Ed209
I guess they're using standard points/GD/goals like they do for other competitions. I'm not sure why the Euros uses such weird rules, but the same reason why Croatia's superior GD to Italy matters nowt in terms of qualifying, nor do Spain's. kaosmark2
yeah, I can't figure it out. I actually thought that if 3 teams were on the same points, and their head to head results were the same (i.e. all draws) then irrespective of scores they go to GD. Not sure I'm a fan of head to heads going above goal difference. Its only UEFA who do it like this. The World cup goes to GD first
Gre
I'm no Croatia fan, but the offside rule is stupid.

Ed209
so what happens now? Is Italy out if they don't score now?
pink_triangle
Spain rode their luck a little. Typical iniesta, when needed he always seems to come up with the goods. Sign of a great player.

Gre
Neither were offside in the end. I was sure it was initially, but both runs were perfectly, perfectly timed from the replay. Commentators saying it puts a huge ask on Croatia, but it really doesn't. 1-1 forces the issue to GD doesn't it?
kaosmark2
I feel really sorry for Croatia. Their performances both in terms of offensively and defensively throughout the tournament have been great. They've definitely been better than any team in Group A, and probably than any in Group C. I'm willing to bet that a lot of clubs will be looking at various Croatian players to see if they can get them. Any that have previously scouted will be gutted as prices will rise a fair amount. Edit: And good penalty shouts as well. Can anyone say there's been a good refereeing performance yet this tournament? kaosmark2
I've only seen it in real-time & the replay once, but it looked to me that the goalscorer was off when the ball through was played. I'm not even going to pretend to understand why 1-1 would have been enough for Croatia, but not 0-
