Joleon Lescott 4 million, 3 years of excellent service then sold for 24 million was nice

Mikel Arteta bought for 2.5 million, 7 years of great service then sold for 10 million

...come close

For what he was bought for and who he was though, its hard to think beyond Cahill

I was more talking about players who aren't sold on for profit. If we're doing that then no one comes better than skippy.

For a player who is of big importance to that team, and a team uses until they've degraded too much to keep playing for that team, they don't come better than Cahill.

The current Fulham team is full of bargains atm imo.

Schwarzer - free

Hangeland - ~£1m

Dembele - ~£4m (We'll sell him for £10m+ next season I reckon)

Dempsey - ~£2.2m

On the other hand we blew £10m on Ruiz... albeit he might come good in the end. Maybe :/.

Questions over his performance led to an expletive laden tirade against the media by manager Sir Alex Ferguson in support of Verón: "He [Veron] is a fucking great player" were his parting words. "And you're all fucking idiots.".

says the fucking idiot who signed him, and who then got very very lucky because Sven was Roman's best friend at the time.

My apologies - I didn't realise top flight football in this country began with Rupert Murdoch and Sky TV.

If nothing else - even for someone older than you - it's hard to get a grip on how much of a bargain he might have been at £50k in 1967.

And, i'd guess, that puts him at around the price level of a £10M-£15M player nowadays - which is probably higher than anything that falls within the 'bargain' price bracket, even if he gave excellent service at great value to the club.

Bearing in mind the first 50k player was a decade before Bonds joined WHU, the first 100k player six years before Bonds joined WHU, and the first 200k player the year after he joined, I still think he was terrific value before you take anything else into account.

Even if you believed it was today's equivalent of a £20m fee (which it isn't), £1m a year over the course of a career is peanuts.

But that was the question in the prem era, especially as not many on here knew football before the prem.

If were doing that pound for pound has to be Steve bull of wolves. £65,000(with another player) in 1986 and scoring 306 goals which pretty much saved them from oblivion.

Now that's importance.
