There's two different sets of rumours - one that fergie wants him gone, the other that Rooney wants to go after being left out the other night.

Rooney's missus helped stoke the 'he wants to go' rumours, with her Tuesday night tweets. Whether or not that's all there is behind them I don't know, but the chances are that fergie doesn't either.

But anyway, would fergie say "yeah, I'm selling him at the end of the season"?

They were discussing rooney on the guardian podcast. Somebody who claimed to have links with the club reported fergie stated rvp was a 9/10 forward while rooney was a 7/10 player. They also wondered if there were still scars left from the incident when rooney put in a transfer request and fergie was ready to get some payback now rooney held less cards.

Something I found surprising listening to the radio yesterday (unsure if accurate) is that villa had just as bad a turnover/wage ratio as qpr. If accurate they are in big trouble.

The regs are designed to concrete the positions of the existing big clubs (and so concrete the positions of the other clubs) while helping ensure the profits of the unambitious owners.

Cortese is still an ambitious owner (to some extent, anyway - I don't know how much), so the rules shaft him.

I don't have any issue with clubs spending big if they want to, as long as there's safeguards in place so that spending now doesn't mean the club is fucked a year or three down the line.

Yes of course. However, if the money spent gets a return then it's fine. O'Neill has plenty of form for spending big on mediocrity in terms of transfer fees and leaving clubs with huge wage bill and players on long contracts difficult to shift.

A chairman can't assume that every penny spent will make a return. If a club is well run, a manager needs a wage budget at the level that if the manager fails, the club isn't left destined to go broke.
