I don't disagree with any of that. I don't think Lerner would.

I just think for a manager that is so highly rated and continues to get jobs at the level he does, is particularly bad in the transfer market. I think Lerner would agree.

O'Neill has strengths, he gets the best out of limited players, and he motivates good enough - just poor at choosing players when he has money at his disposal.

Warnock, Delph, Salifou, Routledge, Harewood, Maloney, Knight, Heskey, Davies, Reo Coker, Cuellar, Shorey, Beye, Young...

All unsuccessful Villa signings for one reason or another. They were either over priced, not very good, sold at big losses, or didn't do a lot but picked up big wages for the duration of their contracts because Villa couldn't shift them elsewhere.

I would personally like to see the end of owners loaning money to their team. Either it should be a gift, or your team has to get on with a lower wage bill.

I agree with the fact that it should be a gift. The 'loan' part is only done to shaft the taxman anyway.

But it needs to go further than that, cos a gift today has the potential to put costs onto the club for years to come.

I like the idea of an owner guaranteeing a players wages throughout the entire contract. There is no chance the clubs would agree though.

yup, that would do it. They can't just gift a player to the club, they've got to gift their contract costs too. Put it in a special purpose bank account so the money couldn't then be used by the club for other purposes, and it's sorted.

(I guess there could be an allowance made against what they have to gift for 'standard wages' of some kind that will be generated from gate receipts etc as time goes by)

And you're right, no club would agree. Anything sensible would require a level financial transparency none of them would ever allow, because every one of them is financially fraudulent in some manner.

Great win :D

Tiote's having a poor season though. Only had the odd game at top form and been prone to far too many idiotic moments.

Cracking cup tie. Chelsea's fixture list is something horrible though, can see the replay + Europa travelling affecting league form and leading them to slipping further. With the cup draw as it is, it's possible that they'll have to win to the Europa in order to qualify for it.... Anyone know how that'd work?

At least one of those top 6 will miss out on Europe altogether. I suspect Liverpool's surge is too little too late for a Champs Lge place, but not qualifying for the Europa would be a big hit. Won't help the national coefficient either if Millwall are carrying it. Can see England losing the 4th Champs Lge place in the next couple of years.

Better player though, so par for the course ;).

Great win today though, won a game against one of the top sides and showed a good mentality that has been missing. Some winnable games coming up so hopefully will secure a top 6 finish if we can keep everyone fit.
