T in the Park 2013

yup, exactly that - tho I suspect they'll try their hardest to not downsize. Festivals have fallen out of fashion; it was always going to happen.

And that's why the drop off in sales isn't anything specifically to do with T booking (for example) Nicki Minaj and the like last year - demand would have been down almost* regardless of who they booked.

(* it's not an absolute, cos some acts always sell better than other acts [irrespective of genres])

Out of curiousity Neil, who would you say were festival sellers? As in, if you were running a major festival, the bands you would get?

I would say AC/DC, Coldplay and maybe Foo Fighters ( though last years Reading may have dented that).

I'd say that it's quite difficult to define who the festival sellers are in the UK, because there's so many different festivals with so many different expectations around them that there aren't really many one-size-fits-all acts.

Waaaay out in front in that regard are probably foo fighters. I'd guess Coldplay are in there too, but of course they don't cross-over very well into the likes of R/L and Download.

And going back the other way, much the same applies with AC/DC, in that they're a poor fit for V and not a great one for T. They're far too irrelevant to too many people.

i know i'm a few hours (and pages late) but on the oxygen website its says "Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas & peaceful New Year.

Keep Rockin’ in 2012 and we will see you in 2013!" and elsewhere on the site it says it'll be back in july 2013 so T will still have that shared payday.

I see what you mean. I guess AC/DC would be the premiere band for a heavier festival!

I think Coldplay could pull off Reading actually. Not a million miles away from Florence, and would be the 'indier' act. Maybe in a couple of years after Melvin has diluted the rock from the festival further.

I do find it fascinating in some regards how a festival choses a headliner. Not as easy as some people on here think! ( Get green Day/proper music e.t.c)

I agree that Coldplay could probably do Reading without problems ... but then again, I guess the fact that they've not done it yet (when big, anyway) would be what worked against them if they did do it. That absence would be taken by some as the 'proof' that they're not a Reading band.

Some big dance acts could include,

The Prodigy(NME)

The Chemical Brothers(NME)

Avicii(NME)

Justice(?)

Knife Party(King Tuts)

Steve Aoki (Tuts)

Afrojack (Tuts)

Thats not including Boys Noize etc who im guessing would be Soma material and be in the Slam Tent.

Excluding Daft Punk as I doubt they will be touring till 2014

Edit* Calvin Harris aswell how could I forgot! No doubt be back.

My Dad listened to The Beatles. If listening to records by bands such as them, Bowie, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin means you have bad music taste, I guess your point is proved.

and yet - if your dada was a fan of music - he'll have also listened to loads of stuff you wouldn't go near.

Which is precisely how it works for today's kids too. They might listen to (say) Blur, but not (say) Primal Scream.

However, there is no getting away with the fact that those bands piss all over what T has booked this year.
that's a 100% subjective view - you like what you like, and today's kids like what they like.

Will today's kids who love (say) Example - who I guess you dislike - also love all the bands you love as much as you love them?

The answer is no. And that gets to mean that the audience for T would be guaranteed to fall away if it stuck to your likes, while there's a chance of something different happening if it doesn't.

Sticking with the same bands is certain death - for any festival.

If you are talking about Dad Rock, then surely Mumfords and Sons must be classed in that category for sounding like folk bands from the early sixties?
nope - cos they're a contemporary act. You know, a today-act for today's people.

Do you think that Mumford fans are out there researching and finding the real folk music rather than the Mumfords fake version? Rolling Stones fans didn't (as a generalisation) suck up old American blues acts; Pet Shop Boys fans weren't buying up 70s disco en-masse, and neither will Mumfords fans go and find the real folk music.

There is today's music and dad music. Today's people - kids - do not want yesterday's music .... that has held true for over 50 years, and there's not a jot of evidence to sugge4st that anything is changing around that - if there was any evidence, it would be because there are not new bands.

If Rockness is confirmed for the same weekend as Download then QOTSA will do both I imagine. They won't play T because they are dad music apparently. The festival going public that T aims for are unable to listen to anything older than 5 years in case they are labelled old. Independent thought is not permitted.

well they aren't lol, a lot of fact or some may call it fiction supports that.

Its because Gazza got banned from posting without it being checked. I am doing glasto for 1st time next year and maybe another so joined here and looking through decided to have a cheeky comment about the killers being named the last iow header, probably shouldn't have but thought I'd just have a little fun. Anyway, people think I'm Gazza, when i joined i didn't know he even had an account but our families know each other and have access to the same pc. But i was unaware he had an account.
